Ming the King

Motorola definitely has a winner on the cards here.

I own a Ming for about 5 months now. I will give some pros and cons from my side. They might be either side for different people looking at them. Firstly I will give the definite features explaining them the best from my side for all. Please correct me if I misquote something.

Before that lemme explain that this is a Smartphone which are defined as - Smartphones run complete operating system software that provides a standardized interface and platform for application developers. By the strict definition, smartphones are distinct from PDA-based devices running operating systems such as Palm OS or Windows Mobile for Pocket PCs. Compared to standard phones, smartphones usually have larger displays and more powerful processors. Applications written for a given smartphone platform can usually run on any smartphone with that platform, regardless of manufacturer. Compared to Java or BREW applications, native smartphone applications usually run faster and integrate more tightly with the phone’s features and user interface.

The two major smartphone platforms are Series 60 (by Nokia) and Windows Mobile for Smartphones (by Microsoft).

Feature Phones - Feature phones have proprietary operating system (OS) firmware. If they support third-party software, it is only via a limited interface such as Java or BREW.

Compared to software for smartphones, Java or BREW software for feature phones is often less powerful, less integrated with other features of the phone, and less integrated into the main user interface of the phone.

Features of Moto Ming:

  1. Display - TFT touchscreen, 256K colors. 240 x 320 pixels, 36 x 48 mm (2.5 inch). Empowered with Touch Screen. I am so fond of them :)

  2. Memory - 12 MB system or in-built. 512 MB micro-SD card which can be used for application install  or for data storage. Very very useful I tell u.

  3. Intel XScale 312 MHz processor. Sometimes it does not feel so.

  4. GPRS modem, Bluetooth v2.0, mini USB. All are quite useful. GPRS is limited y it’s own speed so it’s ot actually Ming’s fault. The Bluetooth module seems to be quite good. Various different devices can be attached like BT headsets.

  5. Operating System - Linux.

  6. 2MP Camera with still and QCIF(178 X 144) wide video. with Macro mode.

  7. FM radio, Real Player (mp3, aac+, mp4 formats), Document Viewer (views pdf, ppt, doc, xls), photo editor.

PROS:

  1. Design Appeal.

  2. Rich application set

  3. Excellent cost than various models from other vendors.

  4. Main USP - Visiting card reader. It is of best use when u collect the business cards and then scan them at home. Good application.

  5. Good intuitive Interface.

  6. Good, sturdy despite looks very delicate. I have dropped it at least 4 times.

  7. Still picture is very good quality.

  8. Instant charging connecting with an XP machine.

  9. Very rich application and synch software bundled with the phone.

  10. Rich applications from the net.

  11. Now at the ambassador price of 12XXX it is worth every penny.

CONS:

  1. The speaker phone is not upto the mark and sometimes people talking from both side results in loss of communication and repetition.

  2. The external camera button should have been in place of the USB slot.

  3. The video is not upto the mark and quality is bad.

  4. Battery backup is bad for about 1 -1.5 day for a frequent talker like me. An extra battery might be a very good option for more frequent talkers.

  5. The vibrator could have been a bit better.

  6. The front trasparent flip becomes very dirty very quickly and specially I become a little finnicky when sombody whom I find unhygenic uses it :)

Well that is my review and will keep updating it if  find something missing after my review after 3 days.

Thanx for your patient reading and don’t forget to rate it or comment.

Yash
