Absolutely a Rokr!

I got my Rokr E6 few days back(graduated from a Sony T610 after 3 years of use). Actually I was looking for a change of phone since 1 year at least! Initially Sony W800i(just around its launch) appealed to me a lot! At that time, it cost something like Rs. 25000 so waited till the price came down. With price coming down, eyes wandered over slew of new models, W810i, then W950, then Motorola Razr Maxx V6(with Sony K810i, nokia n95 & nokia n76 also sometimes making their presence felt in the dreams!). Waited for Maxx V6 to be launched in India but the wait proved to be quite a long one, so just made a decision and settled down on the Rokr.K810 is a nice phone but was ruled out because of its old boring user Interface(UI).

Now to answer the question why Rokr, well I did lot of research as usual and liked the fact that its based upon rock solid Linux OS! Nokia n95 was a definite thing of interest for long time but its price(Rs. 38000) put me off! At that price only extra meaningful thing u r getting is a 5 MP camera(that too without any optical zoom so quite useless unless shooting close enough objects). So great camera wasnt a point of consideration. I still believe great camera cellphones are still at least 2 years away(SE K series is good, not great). Music was definitely one of the important considerations. Two points I consistently got to note in almost all reviews about ROKR were:

  1. Great Music phone(almost ipod quality when u use headphones)

  2. Great audio quality(clear voice reception, reception at the other end is also great)

Now coming to my overall experience, I have to say I am left amazed! The UI is very intutive and user-friendly. The screen is a 2.4" monster that is very clear(much much better than n70/72/73 I believe). Its a touch screen and the finger response is quite good. Its a Linux based device that has reputation of being rock solid. In three days, I havent had any hangups or anything like that(nokia n70/72 are quite notorious for that).  Today I installed iphone theme and now the UI looks just like soon-to-be-launched iphone! Though I have to say some of the icons I dont really like as much and still dont know how to change them! But there are quite a few places on internet(modmymoto, motorolafans, howardforums etc) that can help you with lot of customisations! One of the things that appealed me the most was the fact that so much of customisation was possible on this phone. After having the boring t610 for so much time, it was a refreshing change:) Texting(smsing) is also a bit different on this phone. it allows for two styles of inputs, one is via a QWERTY keyboard that can only be used with the stylus and other option is handwriting recognition(again stylus is required for that as well). it takes a while getting used to this kind of inputting but then all new things in life need to be learnt! Its just a matter of gettting used to a thing. handwriting recognition works fine(again a matter of learning to use it properly. I can write pretty fast now!). Music output quality is really great! just use headphones(I didnt buy bluetooth ones, I plan to buy sony earpods!). Camera quality still not checked. Its a 2 MP camera without any flash so dont expect great results. battery is 1000 mAh so its quite good(n76 has 700 mAh & n95 has 950 mAh, k790 has 900 mAh battery).  With lots and lots of use(esp since its quite new so I am all the time trying to find out everything about it) it still ran for 2 days! I believe it can easily go on for 3 days with normal use. there is a BCR feature(business card reader) but havent tried it so far. Emailing, web etc. not yet used(neither I intend to use phone for these in future or for emails better use blackberry phones)

On the other hand, there are definitely some negatives! No wifi in this age! Real player(with a lousy interface that is slow as well). Camera without any flash so night shots will be really lousy.

In a nutshell, it can be said that its a pretty neat package for 17k rupees. You get a very good music capable phone and also 1 GB card comes bundled with the package. In the end phone is meant for making calls and some entertainment and its quite great package on these counts. Definitely recommended.
