Down to earth

Cell Phones are all the rage today, and many people use these gadgets for more things than just talking. But the majority of cellphone users really just want a phone with the basic fatures of making and recieving calls, sending the occasional sms, and it should be light, small, and good-looking. if u are on the lookout for a phone like this, the motorola T190 is just for you. The nokia 3310, often referred to as the common man’s mobile, has stopped production and this one is most likely to be its successor.

Lets get into the details:

Looks : The T190 is a small phone, but weighs a little, due to its battery. but its no rock in your pocket, and weighs considerably less than the 3310. it has a clean shape, rounded at the edges. The front panel is sort of transluscent, and the LEDs lit up the whole panel. I find that cute. The yellow display is ok, but the font is somewhat weird. anyway, its a nice cute little phone (it has an antenna), if u dont want the antenna, try the T200 at rs 500 extra, which is essentially a T190 minus tha antenna. anyway, no one will stare at it and ask, what is this??

Functionality : Here is where a little problem, if any, can crop up. The locations of the ’soft keys’, that is, the function keys, which are located below the screen, and control the functions that appear at the two corners of the screen. For example, in Nokia, the ’Exit’ or ’Quit’ function always appears on the right side of the display, but here its on the left. also, all the select options are on the right, opposite to Nokia. Same with the calling keys (the red and green ones.) If u are used to Nokia or Samsung, this might create a problem at first, but it will be only initial, once u have gotten the hang of it, it will be no problem. Accessing menus and functions is a breeze, it has a dedicated menu key, and also, SMS and the phonebook can be accessed directly from the main display. You can alos have 9 personalized shortcut keys, which can u can set to access any menu function directly from the main display. Of course, there are all standard features: all SMS functions (no pic msgs), all phonebook functions, clock, alarm, calendar, games, etc etc. The keypad, however tends to be a problem, as the keys are too small, and it maynot work good for sausage fingers. also, the keys are way too hard.

Battery, Reception, etc : Eveything is ok. it has a modest battery life of two days with average use, and the reception is also good. the battery is alittle heavy, but usually does not show problems, unlike nokia.

Well, thats it. The bottomline reads: It is a basic, good-looking, down to earth mobile phone, with no frills, bells or whistles, and will do wonderfully if u want a phone that gets the job done. and at Rs.3500, with bill, its quite value for money. if u know any friendly dealers or retailers, u might get it for 3300. or 2500 second hand. also, some service providers like airtel in some states have offers that give this set bundled with a connection. But warn u... if u are on the lookout for a feature rich mobile, this ones not for u.

Hope u liked it! comments are alllways welcome!

Cheers! vadakkus...
