Thats what this site really should have been called since none of the users on this site believe in keeping their mouth shut, and if they did this site would have closed down long back indeed !
(Infact I don’t think anyone has registered mouthopen.com so maybe..... )
This site has its pro and cons like all sites do (I can already picture everyone reaching to click on the ’add a comment’ button as soon as they hear one bad thing about the site)
The site is a bit cluttered, (just a bit okay!), in certain places they’ve given a box to write your comment in as well as placed a link to click on to be taken to another page to add your comment... thats clutter and duplication ! and I found it a bit confusing at first.
The site has a huge amount of products listed ! I even found stuff like tooth brushes extensively covered ! I wondered the sanity behind that, but on seconds thoughts I did try and search for a toothbrush and did find a review on one and did read the review on it as well so maybe its not all that crazy having it listed on the site. (Now you guys must be wondering at my sanity)
Target audience... I’m not too sure but I think this site is more oriented towards India than any other country, yet I found lots of reviews where prices were given in dollars and that kind of stuff. I think its great that someone living in the US is using this site, but I’m sure there are sites out there (not that I’m saying that there are... before another of my reviews disappears) where they could more effectively use their views on a product.
This site is completely in english ! After all the advancements on the net using various languages, I think a site like this would do remarkably well if it could combine other languages as well, since in order for someone to properly express themselves, they should be able to do it in the language they are most comfortable with.... maybe this site could lead the way by enabling users to write in languages like hindi, marathi, tamil etc. I’m sure there are some great writers out here who haven’t been able to express themselves properly just because of their not so polished english.
What I do like about this site is the number of users that use it and the fact that they are extremely frank, even to the extent of being out spoken which provides a lot of entertainment while reading their reviews. I’ve noticed some of the users on the site are really enthusiastic and write upto 10 reviews in a single day! Which I think is great.
I had written alot more in this review, but when I went to finally submit the review, the server was down and all the rest of the stuff I wrote was lost, I did manage to salvage this much since every 5 minutes I select the entire text of my review and do a ctrl + C (copy) just in case something like this happens, I think others should also try this while witing reviews other wise its really frustrating to write a review for 25minutes and then find its disappeared. Better still write the review off line and then copy and paste it.
The site has a great spell check option which I find is really neat, its always nice to have a tidy review without too many spelling mistakes which look really bad.
The option of selecting how often and on what occassion you want to get an email from the site on your review being read/reviewed/commented is really great, till I got 100 emails in one day, after which I reduced it to only reviewed and commented.... now its down to commented :) or I’ll have to get an extra large inbox at a new email server. But its really fun getting zillions of emails.
Community option as well as trust/distrust option is great, gives you the opportunity to have an online war with someone you dont like as well as to make pen pals with people you do like.
I have also noticed that at times the star writer’s picture appears on the home page, but it doesn’t give any name nor does it provide a link to that person’s page. All it says is that ’’she’’ is a new writer and is writing great reviews and that your name could also be here. They should atleast give the name of this nameless wonder along with the picture. It happens with a user called asmallya, Manu (who has only written 2 reviews... go figure), and another girl who doesn’t seem to be a memeber only. Whats the use of putting them as star writers if no one can find out who they are ? Unless you are suppose to remember their faces and hope to one day come across a review by them. Only way I could figure out their user names was by seeing what the file name of the image was and tracing that back to the user.
Adding a chat for the members would be a great idea as well.(Need not be a multilingual chat to begin with atleast)
Finally I’d like to say its a great site, very well designed and laid out, and I hope to see it improve and get better in future ! ... and not remove too many of my reviews (pls!)
