Star Gazing in 2008

Here’s taking stock of what the year has been so far for Bollywood and what’s in store for the rest of the year.

January clearly belonged to Ajay Devgan . The first big release of the year was Rajkumar Santoshi’s Halla Bol, a film that tackled a socially relevant subject. This was followed by another Devgan starrer Sunday, a comedy starring a host of talented actors. Later we saw Devgan making his directorial debut with U Me Aur Hum, also acting alongside wife Kajol .

In February came the film we all had been waiting for long; Jodhaa Akbar, starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai . Then we saw Hrithik in an item number in his dad’s production venture Krazy 4 . If his injured knee is fully healed, Hrithik will begin shooting for a home production to be directed by Anurag Basu .

The first half of the year also saw Saif Ali Khan in three films; Race with Bipasha Basu, Tashan with Kareena Kapoor and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic with Rani Mukherjee .

Looks like superstar Amitabh Bachchan has decided to have a super year, literally. He is playing a number of superhuman roles this year; Bhootnath in which he played a ghost, God Tussi Great Ho in which he played God and in the yet to be released Aladdin, he is playing a genie. There was also Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar Raj which brought him, Abhishek and Aishwarya together for the first time after Kajra re.

Like dad, Abhishek too has decided to have a super year. He will be seen in a superhero flick shortly, in friend Goldie Behl’s Drona. He has already begun shooting Rakeysh Mehra’s Dilli 6 with Sonam Kapoor. He also made a special appearance in director Apoorva Lakhia’s Mission Istanbul which had Vivek Oberoi in the main lead.

After Abhishek and Vivek, it is natural to jump to Salman, who is busy wooing the small screen audience nowadays. But that didn’t stop the big screen audiences from booing his God Tussi Great Ho. We will also see him in Boney Kapoor’s thriller Wanted Dead And Alive, in a cameo in Hello based on Chetan Bhagat’s One Night At A Call Centre, in the much awaited Subhash Ghai’s Main Yuvraj with Katrina Kaif and in a home production Main Aur Mrs Khanna with Kareena Kapoor .

Compared to 2007, which saw her in just one film (Jab We Met), 2008 has been a busy year for Bebo. She was seen playing a fearless babe in Tashan and will be seen playing a suspicious housewife in Golmaal Returns, and a high society girl in Kambakht Ishq opposite Akshay.

Talking of Bebo, ex boyfriend Shahid seems to have joined the A league with another hit, Kismat Konnection with Vidya.

Akshay Kumar, the current darling of the masses, started the year with a dud, Tashan. But then he was back in his natural territory with a super hit Singh Is King. He is currently shooting for an action thriller Chandni Chowk To China, said to be loosely based on his own life. Akki is also returning to romance with Kambakht Ishq. But the most unusual film for him is going to be Nagesh Kukunoor’s supernatural thriller Eight By Ten, inspired by Manoj Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense.

Nagesh is also directing John Abraham in a celluloid drama called Aashayein; a story of a reckless gambler who discovers that he has few days left to live.

Aamir Khan, who ended 2007 on a high with Taare Zameen Par, will be seen in the Hindi remake of Tamil hit Ghajini. In his role as a producer, he launched his nephew in the refreshing Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and is also working on an English film called Delhi Belly.

Among other stars, Priyanka Chopra was seen in the immensely forgettable Love Story 2050 with Harman Baweja and equally disasterous God Tussi Great Ho. We hope she is able to set the record straight with **Drona.
