Disclaimer: This is review for the music album of this movie and not the movie itself.
Hopefully, I will get to see the movie once its released here in the US. In the meantime, I have been blasting the music from this movie in my car during my commute. The music is composed by Zakir Hussain with assistance from Taufiq Qureshi. Also, Mr. Hussain has rendered his vocals to few songs in this album.
In one word, the music is enchanting. Rendering of century old lyrics using combination of traditional indian and western instruments has endearing soothing quality. Zakir is an innovative musician well-known for his marriage of tabla with jazz and other western musical forms.
In this case, the sufiana style of music gives an unearthy quality to music as if the singer is communicating directly with God. The lyrics are based on poems by Rumi. The soundtrack is for lack of better words - heavenly. It seeps into you soul and elevates your existence to a different dimension.
The theme music has this mesmerizing aalaps by some vocalist (forget the name). This aalaps are intense that manage to transport me back to india everytime I listen to them. Personally, I moved away from indian classical music since past few years. This music just reminded me what I have been missing.
On the not so bright side, I wish either Zakir shouldnt sing or but more effort into it. I like the new breed of indian music directors - AR Rahman, Ismail Darbar and now, Mr. Zakir Hussain. Absolutely, brillant...
