I went for prepaid 3G service from MTNL, Delhi after comparing different options like Tata proton data card, Reliance data card and MTNL 3G data card. The plans are cheaper with MTNL. I decided to use 3G phone instead of data card as Web can be accessed from the phone itself without the need to compulsorily connect through a PC ( for data cards). I use Micromax H360 3G HSDPA phone for this service. The Driver CD provided with the phone contains the PC suite and USB drivers to connect the phone to the PC. Instruction and settings to connect the phone to PC are given in the MTNL website and I connected the phone via USB port without any trouble. I tried the service at two places in Delhi, One at CP and other at Janakpuri. The website loads very fast and I get a Down load speed of 45KBps (360kbps) at both places. (It shows that much only in the PC suite, though I doubt its accuracy). I may have to find out actual connection speed with some other software.
Call charges 1p/sec for all type of calls. Separate talk time coupons/ E-recharge are available with all the outlets in the market. Internet Data Coupons are available at MTNL sanchar huts only in denominations of Rs50 (60MB+Rs14 TT), Rs 99 (130MB+ Rs4 TT), Rs250 (500MB+Rs5 TT), Rs450 (1GB+Rs6 TT) (All for 30 days validity.) I wonder when MTNL introduces E-recharge for data also. When you make balance inquiry (*444#), a flash message appears indicating your balance amount & expiry date. If you had also recharged with data card, immediately after the flash message, you get a sms indicating the free data balance in KB. You have to keep track when you last recharged the data card and use the free data before 30 days.
In the absence of any other service provider offering 3G service in Delhi, MTNL is the King and rules the 3G spectrum. It is a good and only choice for the time being and one is not disappointed with the service and the plans.
