Anarkali lives on..

’Bas Ishq Mohabbat Apna pan’

Who can forget the great performance of Prithvi Raj as Mughal-e-Azam and Dilip Kumar as Prince Saleem in the movie ’’Mughal-e-Azam’’ but this review of mine is not on the movie itself but a splendid five minute music video by Shoaib Mansoor , arguably the best television directors in Pakistan.

Shoaib Mansoor is that gem of Pakistan who always look forward to do good work without any need for fame and money, he likes to be behind the curtains and often very shy to show himself on the camera, Shoaib having numerous great directorial including the all time favourite drama-serial ’’Ankahi’’ and serials based on Pak-Army like ’’Sunherey Din’’ and ’’Alpha Bravo Charlie’’, not to forget his ground breaking work for the pop industry of Pakistan being the mastermind behind one of the first successful pop band ’Vital Signs’.Theres too much to write on Shoaib for a short interesting review.

Shoaib recently directed a masterpiece in form of a music video on the myth/ reality of Anarkali, a stage dancer who fell in love with Mughal Prince Saleem, son of the greatest Mughal Emperor, Akbar. The myth/ reality says Anarkali`s love was termed to be forbidden and she was buried alive in the walls of what is now so called Anarkali`s tomb.

This video is reportedly one of the most expensive in the history of Pakistan, the total bill being 7 million Pakistani rupees. In Pakistan such a budget is usually reserved for feature films. Abid Ali`s daughter Iman Ali(top pakistani model) poses to be ’the Anarkali’ while the role of Prince Saleem is played by a young newcomer from a local fashion designing school.Rizwan Haider may have the looks of Prince Saleem but he has failed to deliver what was required from such an important character in the video.Iman Ali`s performance is at best but who leeds them all is the Peshawar TV artist, Rashid Naz who is by far the best performer for the powerful role of the powerful Emperor Akbar.

The video is shot at Lahore Fort and was made to be Anarkali`s Tomb which is situated in the Punjab Secretariat now.The director gives the message that though that tomb is now turned to an office building and you hear the phone rings and the clerks talking all the day long but when the night falls the Anarkali`s tomb is filled with the magical love of the Prince and the dancer, who were not able to meet their desires in their lives but their love lives on.

These five entertaining and magical minutes with Shoaib`s own composition is a treat to watch. Its been sold by the name of the album ’’Supreme ISHQ’’.   Do get a hold on it.
