Recipe of Mujse Dosti Karoge (MDK)

Ingredients:

Handful of story from Dil to Pagal Hai

Handful of story from Hum Aap ke hai Kaun

Handful of story from Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

Handful of emotions from Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham

Preparation Method:

Add all the above four stories and mix well, generously add to this mixture locations of London and Simla, add few songs to it. Drop two gorgeous ladies and a fabulous dancer in this mixture. Spread them on the celluloid screen. Abracadabra, Mujse Dosti Karoge is ready to be served to the audience.

MDK is the story of three friends Raj (Hrithik), Tina (Kareena) and Pooja (Rani). Raj is the son of Kiran Kumar and Smita Jaykar. Tina is the daughter of Sachin Khedekar and Pooja is the daughter of Satish Shah and Himani Shivpuri.

Raj’s father leaves his home town Simla and goes to London with a dream of achieving lot of name fame and money from the dotcom industry.

While leaving Simla, Raj assures Tina that he shall keep in touch with her by way of e-mail. When he realises that Tina does not have a computer, he decides to send her the mails on Pooja’s computer.

On reaching London Raj starts sending mail to Tina on Pooja’s computer. But Tina is not interested in replying to the mails. To keep Raj happy, Pooja sends the reply in Tina’s name.

Fifteen years roll by, mail keep on coming and Pooja Keeps on replying to them. In the process of replying the mails Raj and Pooja fully understand each other. Raj decides to come back to India.

On knowing about Raj’s visit Pooja informs Tina that all these years she has been replying to the mails addressed to Tina received from Raj. She requests Tina not to reveal the fact to Raj that all these years it was Pooja who was replying back. Tina agrees to it as it was only a matter of 15 days.

Raj comes back to India and on meeting Tina he falls in love with her, while Pooja silently loves Raj. Tina is unaware about the likes and dislikes of Raj. Pooja is well aware about the likes and dislikes of Raj, Pooja knows that Raj loves Gobi ka Paratha.

On staying with Tina, Raj is surprised that the Tina whom he knew by way of mail is totally different from the one he has met in person. Raj expresses his love to Tina and his parents agree to get them married. During his short stay at Simla he becomes very close to Pooja and treats her as one of his best friends.

Raj goes back to London. He keeps on thinking about Pooja. Pooja lands up in London for her college admission. Raj takes her out.

During one of their visit to a church unknowingly Pooja hums the tune that Raj had composed and sent through mail. On hearing her hum the tune it strikes Raj that all these years he had been corresponding and thinking about Pooja and not Tina. Raj proposes Pooja and agrees to marry her, he gives her a pair of Kangan which his mother has kept for her bahu, and has told him that the day he find a girl suitable he should alter the kangan to her size and give it to her.

On reaching India, Raj and Pooja come to know about Tina’s father’s death. Seeing the condition of Tina, Pooja tells Raj to forget her, sacrifice their love and marry Tina for the sake of friendship. Raj agrees to marry Tina under a condition that Pooja should also forget him and get married to someone.

All of them come back to London Raj and Tina get engaged, there enters the surprise pack of the movie (clearly reminds Akshay Kumar of Dil to Pagal Hai) Rahul (Uday Chopra) he starts loving Pooja. Pooja also agrees to marry him. On the day of marriage Rahul asks Raj whether whatever they are doing is it right will it not ruin all their lives. Raj says god is there to take care of it (clearly reminds Hum Aapke Hain Kaun) the moment he says this his mother is shown hunting for the Kangan and finally finds the Kangan with Pooja. Pooja gives it to Tina, but the Kangan is too small for Tina.

Seeing this Tina realises that Raj has made the Kangan for Pooja and not for her and she obediently hands over Pooja to her true love Raj. Performance wise Rani has done a good job, nothing special about the performance of Hrithik except for his dances. Kareena has to know that only by exposing she cannot survive for a long time.

There is nothing noteworthy about the music. Locations are fantastic. Overall the director of this movie Kunal Kohli is so much inspired by the works of Karan Johar that he has totally lifted Karan’s style, but he has also accepted to this fact by giving special thanks to Karan in the opening of the movie itself.

One small doubt Kunal can you tell me one thing, your story is set in a period of about 15 years or so, has your story begun in the past and come to current period i.e. whether it has started somewhere in 1987 when they main characters were shown as school going kids and come to the present , or it has begun at present (2002) and gone to future.

If you say, your story has begun somewhere in past say around 1986-87 and come to the present day, then please note during 1986-87 there was no e-mail facility available in India. As internet was started in India only during the year 1994 and it was in 1998 that it was thrown open public by way of allowing private internet service providers (source https://gisdevelopment.net).

If you say that your story has begun in 2002, and moved ahead for 15 years. In that case when the kids have grown up it should have been 2017 and do you think in these 15 years there would be no further development in computer technology that our hero and heroine are using e-mail only.

In the scene when Raj and his parents moves out from Simla they are shown boarding a Central Railway (CR) train at Simla, the Director should have known that CR does not have any service to Simla. The only railway service available at Simla is of Northern Railway (NR) that too a narrow guage from Simla to Kalka and not the broad guage as shown in MDK. Kunal take care in future.
