It's okay for a first timer

A hackneyed love triangle under the banner of yashraj films directed by critic turned director Kunal Kohli. This film presents to you a quite familiar predicament, one that on- screen protagonists are very often found in.

MDK is a welcome surprise. It has all the attributes of a typical bollywood commercial film today as well as all the attributes of a Yash Chopra film. Namely love triangle, Swiss locales, friendship and love conflicts, huge star cast, larger than life picture frame, great music, catchy tunes topping the charts, Lata Mangeshkar singing, one toe tapping dance number, mix of Indian thoughts and foreign locales (London and Gobi ke parathe) and of course the greatest of all the ideology of “Qurbani” and then Radhekishan ki mahima!

well for a record

director:Kunal Kohli

producer:Yash chopra

music score:Rahul Verma

cast:Hrithik Roshan, Rani Mukherjee, Kareena Kapoor, Smita Jayakar, Sachin, satish kaushik

This film derives its inspiration from the Hollywood film ‘The truth about cats and Dogs’ primarily but also from a couple of other bollywood films as well, like Saajan and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

The plot:

Raj (Hritik Roshan), Tina (Kareena Kapoor) and Pooja (Rani mukherjee) are childhood playmates. Raj has always fancied Tina and Pooja is just a sidelined Friend. Raj moves to London with his parents and remains pals (e pals) with Tina but then it is Pooja who is writing to him with Tina’s name for over 15 years. As expected they know each other in and out can’t do without mailing even for a day. It is time for Raj to pay a visit to India and time for Pooja to confess her doings to Tina. Tina agrees to admit to Raj that it was her letters that he was receiving more so as he was a 6ft, smashing, handsome hunk.

Pooja loves Raj right from childhood, nurtures it via email but steps back when she sees Raj attracted to Tina. Raj loves Tina thinking of her as the one who mailed him for 15 years, when it was actually Pooja. Tina eventually falls in love with Raj after he woos her for 2 weeks. Raj says to Pooja ”Mughse Dosti Karoge!” and they become friends.

He returns to London and keeps thinking of Pooja and not Tina (surprisingly!). Pooja lands in London for an interview and unveils the truth that she is the one who mailed him (by humming his secret favorite tune). Instantly enough Raj proclaims his love for her and denies his love for Tina. Huh! This cannot get any worse.

What follows? well to find out what this culminates into, watch the movie!

I should not be the only one to have gone through the torture, right!

Well I assure you this movie is far far better than Karan Johar’s illogical dreamy dramas(wherein a 8 yr old sets up her dad with his old buddy)

Some good points

Raj cannot penetrate the veneer of pulchritude( very common and typical of a guy). On returning to India he ambles to beautiful Tina and greets her, graciously ignoring Pooja who he claimed to know from within, which is very true.

The dialogue in the church in London. Raj realizes that Pooja is the recipient of his mails and enraged he questions her as to why she did that to him. She replies saying that

“tumne kaha tha ki mughe dekhte hi pehechan jaoge aur meri tasveer tumhare dil main hain.par station mein tho tumne mughe dekha bhi nahin .sab apne pyar ko bahut khoobsurat dekhna chahte hain” meaning he spoke so high of his friendship and the fact that he knew his epal so well but yet could not recognise her at the station as he arrived.

Raj once asks Pooja why she never mailed him and she replies “agar maine tumhe likha hota to kya tum mughe bhi usee tarah javab dete?”

the clichéd ideas of sacrifice of love for friendship, giving up your pyar for another’s bhalai are ideas ingrained in us in an attempt to become great by giving a Qurbani! This is portrayed well.

one thing I fail to comprehend is how people shed off their emotions, love, desires, and aspirations in a jiffy for someone else and just walk over it like it was a doormat.

that’s what Raj does in the church. A minute ago he was in love with Tina and a minute later he is in love with Pooja.

performance

Hrithik gives a clearly applaudable performance. His style , stance, dances, smile, looking clean-shaven in branded outfits are all in the parcel and need no mention at all. His work is definitely much more refined than what he did in Aap mughe ache lagne lage and Naa tum jaano na hum , thus undoubtedly commendable.

Karrena Kapoor does her bit of acting well . her job in the movie is probably looking good and luring crowds and dancing (a sort of sequel to her poo from K3G). she delivers all that her role demands and nothing more than that.

Rani Mukherjee is the one reason anyone should watch the movie for. She is a great actress. you can watch her literally steal the show in every single scene from hrithik and kareena and sometimes the both of them

Uday chopra as rohan verma is another welcome surprise .he has a guest appearance, pivotal to the plot and well delivered.

Music

Rahul Sharma marks his debut as a Music director under the Yashraj films banner. I must say he has made a really good beginning. Melodies that haunts, inspires, excites and entertains. He has definitely done all it takes to make himself heard in one pack.

1.Kya Mughse dosti karoge

the title track is the first song, very catchy, mischievous and pleasant

2.aaj ke ladke I tell you

rocking the stages of all colleges and schools, a very apt song for youngsters

rekindles the passion between hrithik and kareena after you are my soniya from K3G

3.Jane dil mein kab se hain tu

a sweet romantic number portraying a fantastic on screen chemistry of Hrithik and Rani who make a very good pair.

4.andekhi anjaani

the way a girl or a boy would dream of their future love has tune that’ll hook you and its picturisation is perfect.

5.sawali si who ladki

an ideal flattery to any girl again, beautifully picturised.

6.the jugalbandi of all old songs is simply superb. especially

when Raj sings kaho na pyar hain

rohan sings bachna e hasino

raj sings tum paas aye

only itch is that lata di must retire. her voice did suit madhuri in DTPH but is so inappropriate for rani and at least Kareena.udit narayan and sonu nigam are impeccable as usual.

overall a good entertainer.after watching hoards of bollywood masala stories, the end becomes too predictable and obvious, nevertheless a good attempt by each one of them.great for a leisure weekend with family or someone you love.
