That was an unforgettable day for me! I was to fly to Delhi that evening -landed up in canceling my tickets at the last moment. While returning home, I again saw a newly built multiplex cinema near my house and there was a huge hoarding of Munna Bhai MBBS along with other movies and a whole lot of flashy crowd. So, I decided to do the needful and bought the tickets!
The story as most of us know by now, is about a gangster who ran away to Mumbai some fifteen years ago from his village. He lied to his father back in his village that he had become a doctor. His parents were very happy and came to the city to see him and fix his marriage to a doctor’s daughter, only to find that he was a gangster afterall. His parents returned back to their village disappointed. Munna Bhai always loved his parents, and decided to show the world that he too could become a doctor!
And what he does is shown in a series of comical events, which literally turn the whole medical establishment upside down! Okay dear readers, so much so, as the gist of the story.
However, I feel that there is more to this simple story to understand. There is a great deal of social message given out. Hmm, so dear readers, I am taking out my microscope from my closet and taking the liberty (not Liberty shoes!) of enumerating them down:
1) This movie exposes the darker side of the medical profession. Treating patients as mere subjects and not as living beings having feelings is very disappointing. The truth of the matter is that this is what is happening around the world.
2) This movie goes on to prove the fact that medical treatment ‘need not be’ (I am not using the words ‘is not’) the ultimate solution. There can be something more than it, far more superior- that is humanity, hope, support, care, love- the softer side- the ‘jhappi concept’.
3) There is also the depiction of the love for parents, the feeling of gratitude and respect towards them- not to let them down.
4) Love for the girl for whom Munna Bhai stayed back the second time. It goes on to show how much he loved her. I somehow felt that this movie also proves the phrase that “behind every successful man, there is a woman”.
5) And finally, this movie gave me a feeling that even though Munna Bhai was a successful gangster, he was a man in the wrong place (or profession!). He was too soft hearted to be a gangster and had more to give for the cause of humanity than probably a common Tom, Dick or Harry!
Hat’s off to this movie. It was very well executed and the actors had to understand their character very well and they did a great job out of it! There are some great meaningful and soulful songs in this movie to hum.
I hope (though I am quite sure) that this movie is going to win lot of awards!
So, dear readers, I am sure that most of you must have watched this movie by now. And if you haven’t, then please rush in to your nearest cinema halls to watch Munna Bhai MBBS with your family and friends....or...even alone!
With smiles, Chhail Chhabila :-)
