Murud Janjira

Murud Janjira is very close to Alibag and it will be better if you stay at Alibag and make a short trip to Murud Janjira. It is mostly famous for the fort which is built in the sea, like Sindhudurga fort, the one built by Shivaji maharaj at Malvan in Maharashtra. The fort in the midst of the sea is a historical monument and worth a visit. There are number of buses leaving from Alibag for Murud Janjira or it will be better if you take your own vehicle when in a big group. The drive to this fort is alongside the Murud beach which is simply marvelous and you would thoroughly enjoy this drive to Murud. After reaching Murud one has to take a ferry to reach the fort and the same ferry will bring you back. The people who ferry you across the sea, who are the locals know everything about the fort, its history and its historical importance etc. just pay them 50 bucks and they can be your good guides. Ferry boat leaves for this fort every 15-20 mins thus making the travel easy. This very old fort is the only one which Shivaji could not conquer and the monument is built in a very amazing way. After visiting the fort you can spend your rest of the time on the Murud beach close by. It is clean and free of much of pollution and dirt. But I fear that its increasing popularity may make this beach lose its serenity and natural beauty. There are MTDC shacks if you would like to stay on the beach but if you would like to stay in the hotel it will be better to stay at Alibag. There are number of hotels on the where you get fairly good food and which is not very espensive also. For more information you can contact MTDC office at Mumbai, behind Mantralaya in the barracks.
