The museum of Innocence - a short review

The Museum of Innocence(Turkish: Masumiyet Müzesi) is a very celebrated novel by Orhan Pamuk, Nobel-laureate Turkish novelist published on August 29, 2008.  It is an account of the love story between the wealthy businessman Kemal and a poorer distant relative of him Füsun.The background of the the book is set in Istanbul between 1975 and 1984.He has even deep inquiry into Turkish music and films to write this novel.


There is a museum named the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum in Milan, Italy.pamukh visited this museum many times to study more about how a museum is to set up.

Kemal is engaged to a charming girl named Sibel. When he met a shop girl Füsun while buying a handbag for his fiancee he falls in love with her .In next month and a half  an intense and secretive physical and emotional relation between them is followed.


He makes love the day Füsun confesses her deep love for him. It was Kemal’ s happiest moment of life.He has also fallen completely for Füsun. but Kemal keeps denying this to himself. he believed that his marriage with Sibel and secret relationship could continue forever. But Füsun disappears just after attending his engagement.So his reverie is broken. Now he came to terms with his deep attachment and love for Füsun. He passed a very painful period for around a year because he was unable to meet Füsun.He derived consolation from objects and place related to his beloved and their lovemaking. His engagement to Sibel is broken.


At length Füsun responded to his letter.She agreed to meet him. Füsun has got married, living with her husband and parents and pretends to meet Kemal just as a distant relation. She was with genuinely hot tempered.For the next eight years Kemal kept visiting the family for supper and expressed his love for Füsun.he found consolation in various objects related to her.all he  carried away from the house. In the end when her father died.


Further situations led to a divorce of Füsun and her husband. Füsun and Kemal are to be married after a trip around Europe together.But it was otherwise destined.They get separated for life after a night of intense love making. Kemal regarded each object related to Füsun and their love, collected over the years.all these  depicted some discrete moment of happiness and bliss. He decided to convert the Füsun ’s house into a museum of innocence, including all these objects and also other memorabilia related to the period.it was turned out at length that she was his father’s daughter.


This story drags us to a well known place of our own circumstances.We meet all the people as if we know them well.


As this is a life touching story, that may be counted as an autobigraphical novel, it became an unsurpassed classic.
