My name is Con

My name is con would be a more suitable title for this one. Admittedly we see many poor movies from bollywood every year but they get panned by critics and shunned by viewers and so justice is done. We sometimes also see some decent movies (e.g. Sankat City) get rejected. But rarely do we see a marketing con job of this magnitude which might just make this a very very average movie a reasonable success. I am yet to come across a review on TV, print or radio which has dared to say the Emperor is naked. I am willing to believe that I am different from the crowd but the balance of reviews on this site from very unbiased people shows that if not naked, the Emperor is fairly shabbily dressed.

Moving on to the movie; it is trying to do three things: depict a love story, depict story of a person with Aspergus syndrome (hope I spelt it right) and make a strong statement on religious discrimination. Sadly it fails on all three fronts badly. I say sadly because I could have put my Rs 300 and 3 hours to much better use like watching DDLJ or KKHH again.

Here are some of the specifics that don’t work -

  • Why should I care about America and what goes on there when I have more pressing issues closer to home

  • I fail to see what is so extraordinary about what Rizwan does - am I supposed to be sympathetic only because he is differently abled

  • One Indian guy saving a city from hurricane - unbelievable; but worse, the manner in which he does it - laughable

I think you get the idea. The only reason I am spending 15 minutes writing this is if I can contribute towards countering this marketing con job called MNIK - I would feel my time was well spent, even what I spent watching the movie.

Thanks for reading this.
