'Nacho Libre' movie review

Yes, I admit I love this freaking silly movie!I watched this twice & wouldn’t mind watching it again & again. It’s like seeing F.R.I.E.N.D.S.-I never get tired of it.Anyhuu, here goes.......

Ignacio(Jack Black) is a loser. He’s overweight, is a religious missionary who only gets cooking & ’dead man’ jobs, his cooking sucks since the other missionaries don’t pay him to get good quality ingredients & he’s got a unmatched desire to be a Luchador(wrestler), which is prohibited according to his religion. The wrestlers fight for money, glory & gorgeous babes, but Ignacio is confused as to what he wants to fight for as a Luchador. He loves the orphans he cooks for & only wishes to get better food so that he can see them happy one day.One dull morning, a beautiful woman enters the church, Sister Encarnacion(Ana de la Reguera). Not only Ignacio, but all the other missionaries are attracted to her since she’s pretty & the only woman around. But Ignacio knows what he feels is not just mere attraction, he seriously fancies her & tries to pursue her in his own dumb-but-cute way. He’s also worried about this since no one’s supposed to have feelings for a nun!Destiny comes calling when a very skinny man steals nachos which were supposed to be for the orphans, the same night Ignacio sees a poster giving prize money for Lucha Libre.A bulb clicks on Ignacio’s mind & he finally knows who his partner for the match will be.The very same skinny guy, Steven(Hector Jimenez) is not easily convinced by Ignacio, but the two of them need the money, so they join in!Their combo of obesity & anoerexia is easy to beat, but they get surprised when they’re offered money for losing. The reason being, the crowd likes them & even though they’re bad wrestlers, they seem to be good entertainers.Ignacio finally gets to buy better ingredients & cook better food, while Steven gets stylish Mexican-clothes & corn-on-the-cob.But it’s only a matter of time until the Church finds out.Meanwhile, Ignacio hero-worships Ramses(Cesar Gonzalez)-the best Luchador ever.He & Steven are so bad at their game that Ignacio gets irritated & gives up, & the two end up blaming each other.Ignacio also comes to learn, to his shock that Ramses might be a hero, but he doesn’t know humility if it hit him in the face.Ignacio wonders why God has given him an urge to wrestle when he’s bad at the skill. His path to self-realisation is what makes up the rest of the story.

Jack Black is dog-gone funny! His stupid Latin accent combined with Hector’s true latin accent just makes you smile at the unnatural combo.Ana is very beautiful, she looks like a younger Penelope Cruz(I have a thing for Latin ladies, I find all of them look wildly mysterious & gorgeous). She’s well suited for the simple-looking-yet-pretty nun’s role. The children who play the orphans are also funny with their clever depressing one-liners.Cesar Gonzalez who plays Ramses is supposedly a real Luchador, as read on wikipedia.org.In the movie, he’s masked & he likes to pout his lips! The scenes where Ignacio tries to woo Encarnacion is very sweet. He’s a simple guy who’s formula for love is childish-but-oh-so-cute.The part when Encarnacion reads his love letter just makes you laugh at his cute XOXO’S(means kisses & hugs). The Mexican place is very dry & desert like, kind of like my place here, but the surrounding suits the film’s theme quite well.A silly movie which makes you feel good.

Final grade- B+, a nice time pass movie with a simple storyline but funny actors who deliver the message without making it sound too in-your-face-emotional.
