Nintendo Wii Big Brain Academy Game

Flex your brain the fun was with family and friends. This game, in my opinion is a great game for adults and children alike.

We’ve had it for a while now and play it from time to time as its great fun and we still haven’t bored of it. The great thing about this game is that it is for kids 3+ and up and is a great learning tool as well as fun. It’s always good as an adult as well to keep the old brain ticking over and this I think really tests your brain and keeps you sharp and alert.

Big Brain is a game that measures your brain’s weight by utilising a set of games and puzzles to solve. When you fist start the game you pick your Mii character (I always think its great fun to be able to play with your Mii character, especially as mine looks freakily like me!) and then enrol in the academy... The Mii character is then set as the photo on your student record book.

The controls for this game are very easy. You use the Wii remote by just pointing it at the screen and then click on the bit you want using the pointer on screen so no real fancy moves involved in this game. It’s nice because this makes it quite easy for kids to use as well. It’s a very quick game to pick up too and doesn’t take long to learn what to do or how to do it which is nice.

There are five different categories in this game designed to test your brain in different ways. The five categories are as follows:

Identify

Memorise

Analyse

Compute

Visualise.

if we take the compute category, on screen you will be given some blocks with a number written in each. You are then asked to make a total using the blocks and will need to point and click on them to get rid of some of the blocks until they add up to the number you are given.

If you get it wrong then you do not score on that point. There are 12 questions per category which give you 60 questions in total so I would say each game lasts a few minutes each. Each of the different games are quite fun and involve a bit of thinking. You can take your time and think about it to make sure you get the question right but your score is based on speed and accuracy so the faster you answer, the more points (or grams) you earn.

The grams are weighed up at the end to show how much your brain measures. I really like this game because I find it quite competitive, I always want to better my score and I also want to get a better score than the person sitting next to me so it does urge you on to go faster and get a better score.

There are a number of different modes in which you can play. The practice mode allows you to play each game separately and lets you win a medal according to your score. There are four different levels, easy, medium, hard and expert. As well as the individual games you can play group games as well which are fun if you have a big group of people so people don’t have to wait ages for their turn. There are three group modes:

Mind SprintMind Sprint is played just how it sounds, as a sprint with team v team in a split screen race, much like a really race and this can get very boisterous and loud as eight players can play in the two different teams.

Mental MarathonMental Marathon allows the team it score as many points as they can - much like a marathon, a succession over a long period of time however once you make a mistake your go is over.

Brain Quiz. The graphics are pretty normal Wii graphics, perfect for this type of game setting but not great if you are a hard core gamer. The little characters used in the games are quite cute. For example in one of the game play, visualise I think, a character pulling a funny face passes by you on the screen and you have to remember which face they were pulling and it’s quite funny to see all the different variations.

We bought this game for about £15 I think as it had gone down since it first came out. I think this is a fair price for it as it’s fun but doesn’t have quite the big content of some other Wii games. However, saying that I think you will never tire of this game and it will still be playable in years to come as you could never tire of improving your brain power or competing against friends and family.
