Affordable, bang for your buck

The 2003 Nissan Xterra, a classy SUV with a bit of ruggedness, is a 5 seater. Cheap and affordable, the average retail price is around $18, 500. 2.4L 4-cylinder engine, with 143 horsepower, the Xterra is a sensible yet fashionable SUV. It offers power, and an off-road capability that out-classes its competitors. This midsize SUV is back for another year of good times.

Available Models

This youth-oriented SUV comes in four models: the 2003 Nissan Xterra XE, the XE V6, the SE, and the SE S/C. The XE has a 2.4-litre engine and 5-speed manual transmission, and is available in 2-wheel drive. The XE V6 has a 3.3-litre engine, and is available in either 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. The SE shares the XE V6’s engine, and is available in 4-speed automatic transmission. The SE S/C contains a supercharged 3.3-litre V6 engine, and is available in automatic transmission. The XE V6, SE, and SE S/C are all available in either 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.

Interior Features

Inside, the 2003 Nissan Xterra proves roomier than most SUVs. It features power steering, a tachometer, air conditioning, and a split folding rear seat. The XE V6, SE, and SE S/C also offer a height-adjustable driver seat and a tilt steering wheel. On the SE and the SE S/C, the steering wheel is leather-wrapped, and equipped with radio controls. A Rockford/Fosgate AM/FM radio with in-dash 6-disc CD changer is also a standard feature of these two models. Both these upper models offer the Rugged Leather package, which features leather upholstery, and suede accents.

Exterior Features

A roof rack and rear privacy glass are standard on all 2003 Nissan Xterra models. Side steps are a feature on the XE V6, the SE, and the SE S/C, while front tow hooks are offered as standard on the SE and the SE S/C. A pop-up sunroof is available for the SE and SE S/C models, and naturally a tow hitch is an option for all Xterra models.

Performance

All 2003 Nissan Xterra models come equipped with front/rear brake-force proportioning, and a heavy-duty alternator. Performance numbers are as follows: 143 hp at 5200 rpm, and 154 lbs-ft of torque at 4000 rpm for the XE, 180 hp at 4800 rpm, and 202 lbs-ft of torque at 2000 rpm for the XE V6 and the SE, and 210 hp at 4800 rpm, and 246 lbs-ft of torque at 2800 rpm for the supercharged SE S/C.

Safety and Security

The basic safety features on all Xterra models are dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes. The Protection Package offers wheel locks and an airbag anti-theft bolt, while curtain side airbags and an anti-skid system are optional features offered for the first time in 2003.

All in all, it’s a great car. Of course, I wouldn’t expect you to buy it based on this review, I hope any doubts you had about the Xterra were cleared up, and if you’re in the market for buying a car, go test drive a 2003 Xterra and see how you like it.
