Picked the book up walking from a hawker walking from Churchgate to Fountain, to make up for some reading on a lazy Sunday.
Contrary to get portrayals of India as a land of snake charmers and elephants, Tullys writing was more of an eye-opener for me, 25 odd years in this country and I call myself an Indian?
Not only did Tully give vivid and gripping descriptions of various events / people who consist of the diversity India has to offer, but goes into the causes of various events and traditions. The social structure of the country, what really happened during Operation Blue Star, the Sati at Deorala, to what went behind Ramanand Sagars Ramayana this book has it all on India.
Hats off to Tully for such clear and structured thoughts written in the most gripping of ways.
Saw him a while back at Churchgate railway station taking some photographs of people moving around - completely dissolved in the crowd for a six-foot frame. No wonder he writes so well about the country.
