The Lizard King

Jim Morrison once said ?Listen, real poetry doesn’t say anything; it just ticks off the possibilities. Opens all doors. You can walk through anyone that suits you.? One of my personal greats Jim Morrison was a poet a writer a musician an artist. Ever had one of those books that changed your life completely? this is one of those books.

Though many know Jim Morrison from ?The Doors? and the infamous Oliver stone movie of the same name. Not many know the poet and the artiste. To quote from the book ?Jim Morrison was a man who would not, could not, and refused to compromise himself and his art.? Jim Morrison was one of those rebels that history has seen and heard and has lost, Jim Morrison loved poetry; he did everything for his works. Jim started writing poetry as early as the sixth grade.

Sometimes hours and sometimes years were put into drafting and redrafting his poems. Many believed that he was ?assisted? in his poetry by his drug use and alcoholism. To answer his critics I again quote from the book ?Jim believed that one cannot simply will the muse; the writer or artists powers lies in his ability to receive, as well as invent, and it was the artists duty to do everything possible to increase his powers of perception? (Edgar Allen Poe?s most celebrated poem ?The Raven? was written while high on coke?.)

After all his fame Jim Morrison was a simple guy, he never owned home.Usually what he owned at any given time was clothes to last a week, four to five cartons of paperback books and a six pack of beer. Jim Morrison as a performer had the ability to mesmerize the crowd, take them on a trip. Most of Jims songs were his poems that the band had added music to.

The music of the doors is eerie and surreal, its indefinable as a genre for it is unlike the music of the same generation, which gave us Hendricks and Joplin. He died under mysterious circumstances in Paris; His grave has been a shrine to fans of his music and poetry. Many believed that Jim faked his death a story that would be synonymous with the legend of Jim Morrison.
