Got this phone for Rs. 1, 900 (with bill + 1 yr warranty) in Poona about a week back. Will mostly try to give info here which is not given elsewhere or in the specifications. For the specifications, you have the Nokia website.
The cons:
1) Address book (phone memory) can take only 200 entries (one number per entry only). Forget about saving email ids, websites, etc. Number of entries in the SIM will depend on the SIM memory. Note that most operators seem to be passing of only 16k SIMs with pre-paid connections. For more on this please see my review on Airtel.
2) Screen is extremely small …and especially so in relation to the relatively larger fonts. You can view only 3 lines of an SMS …and for larger words, only 1 word per line! This makes the phone very inconvenient for SMSing.
3) The phone saves all incoming SMSes to the SIM 1st - u don’t have the option to save in the phone memory or copying it from SIM to phone and vice versa! The phone memory will be used only after the SIM memory is exhausted!
4) If you try to forward a received SMS, you will find that you can’t send it to multiple recipients; nor can you use distribution lists! However, if you select “Edit” instead of “Forward”, you can then send the SMS to multiple recipients or distribution list. Strange!
5) You cannot use the “Send to many” or the “Send to list” functions with the “Send later” function! You can only use one function at a time! ...Very bad!!
6) Phone does not display the Date on the main screen. You can however set it to display an analogue or digital clock after the backlight turns off or after the screen saver. Here the date is displayed …but not the day!
7) The "Dialed Numbers" log does NOT include the duration of the call (you can however see duration of ONLY the last call in "Call Duration" elsewhere in the menu! Very bad if you keep track of costs this way!
8) The SMS multiple recipient function sends the SMS to 1 contact at a time ...& not all at once! You can however use distribution lists instead.
9) The Distribution lists which each allow you to send SMSs to a maximum of 10 recipients also send SMSs to each recipient 1 by 1 …which is quite slow …unlike for eg. what I have seen in Motorola L7, etc, where the SMS leaves you phone in one go …which is very fast and efficient! However, since this can proceed unattended you can leave the phone to do its job without wasting your time.
10) Speaker phone quality is average. Hands-free quality is less than average and looks cheap too.
11) No calendar.
Pros:
1) Voice clarity and signal reception are quite good!
2) Battery life is reasonably good (not excellent though).
3) No torch ...like the 1100.
4) Keypad is soft, has a nice feel and is quite good for rapid SMSing.
5) Ring tones are nice …for a phone of this class.
7) The phone lets u set a custom time for SMS delivery (“Send Later” function). Sorely missed this function after I gave up my Reliance (LG) connection (however, it was not possible to set a custom time with Reliance …you can only select a time duration from the menu, ie. 30 mins, 2 hrs, 1 day, etc). But since this is a phone function in Nokia 1112, I guess the phone has to be switched on and within coverage. With Reliance, it is also a network function, so the SMS stays on the Reliance servers; which means you can switch off the phone or go out of coverage area …your SMS wills till be delivered at the specified time. This function can’t be used with the "Send to many" function.
8) The phone has a Call and SMS filtering capability – you can blacklist numbers of people who are harassing you! This basic and extremely important function is missing on most phones …even higher end phones!
9) You can set timed profiles …so for eg. if you want to keep your phone on “silent” (or any other profile) till say at 9:30 am, when you get up, you can set the timer accordingly, and the phone will remain silent only till 9:30 am ...and you wont miss any calls after that. Very useful function!
10) The phone has a SMS counter for Sent and Received messages. Very good for keeping track of your SMS billing.
11) As far as I know, you can make 6 SMS distribution list. Each list can hold 10 numbers.
12) SMS editor can handle upto 918 characters! However, considering the tiny screen, it will be VERY difficult to read or compose a SMS of this size!
Overall, I thought it to be a “ok” basic phone in you are looking for a phone only for calling and SMSing. However, the screen is extremely small for efficient SMSing. This is my main gripe against this phone. Hence, I would not recommend this phone for anything except voice calls. Even for voice calls, the address book memory is very small and does not have multiple entries. Competing products offer bigger color screens and way bigger address books …for slightly higher prices.
For eg. I was getting an LG B2060 at the same dealer for Rs. 2, 300 (after some bargaining). This has an 300x3 address book, bigger 64k color screen, GPRS, and looks much better too! I decided against this at the last moment because it seems it did not have some of the functions of the Nokia (have marked them in bold above). Also, the SMS multiple recipient function seemed to accept only 6 numbers. Also, it is the UI is implemented in less efficient way and you would require more button clicks to do a job. This and some other quirks with the UI made me opt for the Nokia. Otherwise, as far as the hardware is concerned, the LG seemed a clear winner. This is just a preliminary observation of the phone at the shop. Note the pros and cons above, decide your priorities, and use your own discretion.
It is best to buy from a dealer who lets you check out the functions of a “live” model and decide for yourself. Don’t buy a phone after just looking at a dummy model!
NOTE: This review is actually for Nokia 1112, but posting it here as Mouthshut has no seperate catageory for the 1112 ...which is exactly identical to the 1110 except for the inverted screen. The 1112’s pack includes a hands-free; the 1110’s does not.
Edit: (4 May, 2007):
In just about a week of very limited use, the screen and ringer died. In short, the phone was suddenly and totally unusable.
It was repaired at a Nokia Care Centre under warranty, and within 4 hours of taking delivery, it developed the same problem. In short, it is again totally unusable.
And as a bonus they have left some particulate matter under the screen making it look dirty and ugly.
Nokia is adamant about not giving a replacement. And the service centre has the gall to say that they have no authority to give any replacements. For that you need to take it to the head office which is very far away for me.
In short, my brand new phone is totally unusable and the Nokia Care Centre, Telephone requests and email have all yielded no positive results from Nokia.
FWIW, have also discovered that this is a “Made in China” phone. Nokia should be ashamed of passing off such unreliable and shoddy products in the Indian market. None of my other phones ( LG, Motorola, etc, made in Korea, Singapore, etc had/have developed any significant hardware problems) After this experience I would neither recommend any Nokia product nor ever touch one myself.
Now I have to spend more time, effort and money in repairing this Nokia junk...
