Nokia 2280 - Isme Nahi Hai Woh Baat!!!!
Reliance India Mobile with its prepaid mobile service paved the way for Nokia to launch its CDMA supported handset Nokia 2280.
Reliance banked on the fact that the success of Nokia in GSM mobiles would definitely reflect in WLL too and used their marketing skills to their maximum (which really did work, Hats Off to them)
As expected its entry in the telecom sector certainly created waves with many of the GSM diehards (including myself) switching to Reliance, after ?Mujhe Karna tha Duniya Muthi Me?
Nokia 2280 has all the standard features that a typical Nokia cell has details of which you may have read in either avisb?s or OWAIS83?s review. So let?s not waste time on that stuff.
What was lacking in these reviews has been highlighted as under:-
- R Connect and R Surf
Ok, you can surf the net (including MS) using R Surf. Nokia 2280 uses a text based browser ?JBrowser Version 1.5.5 by Jataayu Software. Hmm! that sounds great but it isnt really. Five out of ten times your HRD (High Resolution Display) shall very elegantly flash a message Server could be down or is not responding.
The funniest part is that you cant log onto to the yahoo wap site even though stands first in the list of available wap sites. I have tried this several times but failed miserably.
- Modem, Is it worth?
You can use your phone as an external modem and surf the net on your desktop using a data cable and software provided by Reliance. However it costs about 3000 bugs (Yes I know it?s too expensive and hence I myself have not tried it yet!!) .I thought its better to stick to my dial up instead.
- Absence of Composer:-
Attention! Ringtone lovers, this set will definitely not suffice your purpose .Composer, a standard feature in all nokia handsets is absent and its place has been occupied by the Keyguard Menu. Come on, how can u include this as one of the main menu item (no: 8) when every kid on the block does knows how to do it.
Also composing your own ring tones might be possible in distinct future since this feature is disabled in this set. To add to the misery, the ring tones available on R World are really boring. No Dhoom, No MI2 nor even Saathiya. Satisfy yourself with Ek soch thi ek Sapna tha(Can?t stand it anymore!).
- Bulky:-
Yes, the handset is quite bulky and heavy but can manage it Yaar.
Only thing that upsets is the rigid keypad with rock hard buttons. Cover to could have been better but looks fine.
- Remove and Reinsert:-
Yes thats what you will do with this handset. Very frequently this handset freezes. You will have to remove the battery and reinsert. (Probably a little bit of exercise was intended). The battery provided is really poor and discharges very soon.
Within the first six months itself I had the privilege to get my phone serviced thrice!!
- Inbuilt Heater!!
Talk on the phone for about 3 to 4 mins and feel your ears get warmed up. Such frequent heating not only tends to weaken the battery life but also reduces talktime. This effect is more pronounced when you surf the net.
To sum it up, I would recommend all those diehard fans of Nokia to look for some other options, Reliance has now introduced many of them now and for others better stay away from it.
Any comments, suggestions are warmly welcomed.
