Nokia 3100. professional review...

Well guys I have been using this phone for past one month and would like to share some of my experience with it...

INTRO: why was nokia 3100 launched... remove infrared from nokia 6100, add a few youth features and you have the 3100...according to nokia 3100 is aimed at youths..

some specs at a glance

  1. 4096 128*128 color screen

  2. MMS(with sounds)

  3. wap with xhtml

  4. 4 tone polyphony

  5. picture caller id( thumbnail size)

  6. 850 mah li-ion battery.

  7. fun cam supported.

  8. goto soft key

DESIGN: First the good things...there seems to be just one and that is that nokia 3100 is beautifully compact...okay it is not a sl55 but a length of 102mm and 15 mm thickness is preety damn light...however the design of nokia 3100 is probably not upto the mark..the phone bears more than a passing resemblance to the cheaper 2100 specially with the light blue color...The keypad believe me is very bad!! the keys are rubber and very close together , in particular the middle row...overall there is a lot of scope 4 development...

FEATURES: well well.. I know some of you out there may be angry at nokia for continuing with a 4k screen and 4 tone polyphony..PERIOD..in the 3100 it is not the specification that matters but the implementation!!! the 4k screen is much better than any other 4k in the market..compare it with a nokia 6610 or siemens sl55 or a set68i and you will know....however the 4 tone polyphony is same as in other models...

The best thing that happened to nokia 3100 was probably that it was based on 40 series...It has a beautifully functional calendar and contact diary...It can store abot 150 text messages and the onboard dynamic memory is very cool 925 kb...

well it does not have infrared but u can use the dku-5 data cable ...that brings the pop-port to the notice..another nice carry over from nokia 40 series...(I have a reason to believe that the fin camera is pretty useless)...

however there are some changes similar to nokia 7250i like the use of xhtml browser and caller id picture..however the implementation is half baked... the caller id pic is so small that u have to use a magnifying glass to recognize a person.. also you can include sounds in the mms message but unfortunately it was not working in my model.. (whenever I try to insert a sound it gives a message the ( the file is copyright protected..and I have a reason to believe that its a bug beacuse it happens also to sounds which I have personally downloaded from pc......

ESSENTIALS: well the above part of my review was certainly not encouraging for nokia 3100 buyers but this part will explain why I bought it and I am still loving it.... THIS phone is very strong in basics....It has a beautiful reception and voice quality...the speakerfone function is legendry to say the least...clear and loud...

The battery life is amazing ...if your 7250( 720 li-ion) went for 3 days this beautiful battery would power you for 6 days non stop... for me it is atleast 5 days..( with heavy gaming and keeping it on at night)..

the text messaging is very fast very good...similar to other new phones you can create your own personal folders for storing messages...

fun and games:well It has 3 games all of which are playable...beach rally is a good racing game with a good refresh rates..bowling is pretty good, , snake 2 is as it used to be...

CONCLUSION: so the good and bad points are:

good

  1. very good reception and battery life

  2. improved 40 series interface

  3. clear 4096 screen and compact size.

bad

  1. so so design

  2. very bad keypad.

  3. nothing new???

so the bottomline is that nokia 3100 is a very usable phone...you will not have complains to mention....although the design is a drawback I guess the glow in dark feature is attractive 4 some people....at its core the 3100 is an excellent phone with a very high usablity...how I wish it had infrared??? recommended 4 new buyers but I will suggest if you can afford go for nokia 6100..after the price drops it has become affordable and is similar to nokia 3100 in core strengths.......any questions are welcome...

ps: I have not posted the specs of the phone as you can get them from the official nokia website    http://www.nokia.co.in
