Advantage: Nokia 5700 - Best Value for money

My review will tend to be very comprehensive since I searched for a phone and purchased after only 6 months. I was evaluating the phones: Nokia E90, Nokia N95, Nokia N73, Nokia 5300, Sony Ericcson P1, Sony Ericsson 790a, Sony Ericcson 810. I heard Samsung has a poor battery and LG’s concept phone is still half baked. So, after a couple of phones, I deleted them from my list.

Advantage Nokia 5700:

  1. Same features as in N95 except 2 megapixel camera.

  2. Has GPS functionality also. (U need to subscribe with provider)

  3. You can enable name announcement of caller which notifies u of the caller by name from phonebook

  4. Excellent music + bass (with headphones the bass reverbrates) as good as Sony Ericsson. After the loud function has been activated I found it better than my friend’s Sony Ericcson. It is good. You can throw away your creative music player.

  5. Video quality is also good. And the size is restricted to size of memory. The mic’s quality is very good and picks up conversation from 6 feet off. Crystal clear. You can throw away your voice recorder also.

  6. Symbian Version enables you to install programs (Sony P1 only available)

  7. Cost in India Nokia 5700 - Rs.12500 / N95 - Rs.34500 / E90 - Rs.40000 / Sony Ericcson P1 Rs.29990. Good features for less than half the cost.

  8. 369Mhz Processor - Faster processing. No hangups at all. N73 thinks a lot sometimes.

  9. Message Text which can be listened to. No need to scroll the message.

  10. The copy paste function is still present.

  11. The single choice function made using the pencil function key is now made by the # key.

  12. Looks Great, much thinner  and weighs lesser than phones having same functionality!

The Bad:

  1. The swivel goes 180 degrees in clockwise direction and 90 degrees in anticlockwise. If you force differently, it will break. If it breaks, new phone need to be purchased! (Do not give this phone to children!!)

  2. Image quality is good outdoors but not excellent. But Indoors there is always noise even with the flash. Outdoors if u use flash with ambient background, the background tends to wash out!

  3. Sometimes it automatically goes into panarama mode without user input. I guess this is a software issue and can be fixed. (I still have not found how to fix it!)

  4. Found the charger port inside the rubbercover. Very irritating to open it every time I wanted to recharge. They could have kept this outside as well.

Overall: 9/10

Purchased at a Nokia Priority showroom and got good value for money. Let me put all for cost comparison at time of purchase. This is for chennai only. The value for my old phone is in brackets. It was a Nokia 6620.

Nokia Priority Dealer: Rs.12500/- (Rs.3000)

Univercell: Rs.12500/- (Rs.2200)

Studiocell:Rs.12900/- (Rs.2200)

Vivek&Co: Rs.12700/- (Rs.2700)

Poorvika: Rs.12, 200/- (Need to c for evaluation)

Improvements Suggested:

  1. Complete Swivel 360 deg with full rotational capabilities. So that it does not break.

  2. Better camera indoors also. Less noise needed.

  3. Camera protective cover.

  4. Preloaded office and pdf reader.

  5. Charger Port to be fitted below as normally.
