You want a good phone? Buy the 6210!

About a month ago, I added a 6210 to my collection, and I still haven’t got over how good it is. I had intended to keep using the 7110 on my other contract as I was going to be using both numbers, but I soon decided that I’d be better off leaving the 7110 in a drawer and carring two SIM cards in the 6210 (the spare one can sit comfortably under the battery for safe transportation when not in use).

The 6210 has everything that the 7110 has, in my opinion, with the exception of the rather handy Navi-Roller, although I can see why they’ve left it out. There probably wasn’t any room for it in the 6210, since the small, light package packs in so many other features. You can’t scroll quite as quick with the up/down key, and the abitily to scroll and press in the roller was great for WAP browsing, but once you realise that the Call key doubles up as open/select in the browser, you haven’t lost a lot.

Retained from the 7110 is the large phonebook, WAP browser, IrDA port, and internal modem, although this supports HSCSD for faster connections if you care to pay for the service (only on Orange). Gone are the bulk, the external aerial, the unreliability that so many people reported and several grammes in weight. Also gone is the sliding keypad cover, and although it was quite cool on the 7110 in a Matrix kind of way, I’m actually glad to see it go. The only problems that I personally had with the 7110 were with the slide being loose, so that’s now not an issue.

New in the 6210 is a voice dialing feature, which I must admit that I didn’t bother with for a few weeks, thinking ’’oh yeah, this’ll only work if I use exactly the same tone of voice with no background noise’’, but since I did bite the bullet and give it a go, I’ve been fairly impressed. It’s so far worked for me in busy streets, in areas with lots of traffic noise, and pretty much anywhere you’d care to use your mobile. I’m not sure that it’d work in a club or bar where you struggle to hear yourself think, but in that situation most people would go outside to make a call anyway.

The one thing that I thought I’d really miss from the 7110 was the large screen, but in actual fact, the amount of information that the 6210 displays on it’s smaller screen area isn’t a great deal different due to Nokia using a higher resolution.

I think that this phone is going to see Nokia leading the business/WAP mobile category until THEY produce something better. It’s easily the best handset on the market today, although I can imagine that I’ll be saying the same about another Nokia in about 10 months time. Having said that, this is a phone for serious users, or those interested in browsing WAP sites, and there are other mobiles that are probably better suited to those who just want to make calls and send SMS messages (like the 3310).

Overall, I can’t recommend it enough.

Oh, and Snake2 now has a number of different mazes to choose from, so it’s got to be good!
