I have owned a 6610 for the past 1 year. Exactly one year. I know, because my phone decided to conk off a week after the warranty expired!! :-)
Took the piece to the Nokia couldnt Care less Centre where they had one look at the phone and said: This is common problem with 6610 model. A chip needs to be changed on the motherboard. Weve seen it many times. Dont worry, take it to main centre and pay Rs.1000. Itll be repaired
Duh?!!
While I admire the honesty and helpfulness (??) of the service-lady, I am amazed at the callousness an MNC like Nokia can dare to show. Only in India!
The defect
The keypad of my Nokia 6610 stopped responding. No, I didnt drop it or let rainwater in. In fact, the aforementioned lady was nice enough to tell me before I could explain myself, that there is a known problem with the keypad controller of this model. She even showed me the component.
She also mentioned that this remains their fastest selling model.
Whoa!
My request
I was wondering if anyone reading this segment of reviews has faced similar problem with the 6610? The past year it has worked pretty fine except for a software glitch that screen would go blank while dialling or talking at times and phone may reboot. What I want to know is whether the problem is widespread or only with a certain batch?
Conclusion
Whether the problem is with one piece or the entire range, stay away from 6610. There are far better models available today at much less cost. So which phone is the best buy today? Well, even I am hunting on Mouthshut for recommendations on that. Probably another Nokia :-)
Update Aug 31 2005
The phone was repaired free, thanks to a second year Extended Warranty offer at time of purchase. With Consumer Rights remaining a non-priority area, I wonder if MNC service quality will eventually match PSU quality one day?
