Old hardware running new software

Clearly aimed towards introducing windows phones to budget category.

Updated:

With the Windows 7.8 rollout it gives an even more simpler experience to users.

Screen size is 4" which along with the build can give the looks of a premium phone. But the hardware limitations make it clear that it isn’t

The main things I would like your attention towards are:

  1. No USB mass storage(Zune sync only) - Highly questionable since Nokia was aiming for an easier crowd to please with the most displeasing option.

  2. Lot of incompatible apps in the marketplace - Due to the hardware limitations many processor intensive apps are disabled for downloads. But that is to be expected for the price you pay:)

  3. Limited storage - this could be a deal breaker in most cases.

Even after all these flaws how is it a 4 star rating? Because everything is just a touch away. I introduced my parents to their first smartphone and I’m surprised how adaptive they are after being very reluctant to a Lumia.

I had set up all tiles they would need. Rap Dialer is a must. All necessary apps from local news, offline maps to entertainment apps they would need. That is all you need to begin. All your messages from mails and accounts in one place, updates from family in one place without knowing where they are coming from. Even switch for Wi-Fi or mobile data can be a tile. The simplicity in windows is what made it easier from android. As long as the cache is cleared regularly it is a full fledged smartphone.

The camera is good but because of the absence of led flash it can only take in good lighting. In those cases it is surprisingly crisp. But nit has got nothing for low lighting.

Other doubts:

  • Bluetooth transfers only take place between Windows phones. This is the case in all WP phones so don’t entertain those reviews.

  • LCD Screen with 233 ppi is expected for the price. It is average and is average in the sun. Obviously no gorilla glass for the price hence invest in a good scratch guard.

  • With new 7.8 optimizations its battery has one of the highest scores for battery test compared to other Lumia flagship phones.

This phone is awesome. Its a new software on old hardware which does the job. But if you are still looking for something better go read up on the newer budget flagships(Lumia 520).
