Ater having been to most of the other Bengali restaurants in town, I finally made it Oh Calcutta on a Saturday evening. Located centrally on St. Marks road, it is easy to find and has valet parking too. The ambience is soothing and does nothing but to transport you into the magical land called - Kolkata.First up, we went for a drink and ordered our regular - fresh lime juice.
The waiter recommended the "Gondhoraaj shorbot" which is basically a mix of Gondhoraaj (a type of lime which is a favourite of Bengalis) and lychee juice. We were pleasantly surprised by the fact that the ingredients were directly sourced from Kolkata. For the main course, we went for the Cholaar daal and Dhokar Dalna. Both were just fabulous with the pooris. At Rs 70 for 6 pooris, they somewhat overpriced but the taste more than makes up for it.
The real surpise was when we were thinking of dessert. The waiter came up with a brilliant piece of advice - he recommended the Nolen Gurer Ice Cream". Nolen Gur is the jaggery made from the sap of the date palm. I have had Sandesh and Kheer made of Nolen Gur. But this was the first time I even heard of ice cream made from this stuff. Not to day, I just had to order it. And I did not regret the decision. It was one of the most amazing desserts I have ever had. Frankly speaking, I was never a fan of Nolen Gur, but Oh Calcutta has made me change my views about it. The ice cream is also brought in from Kolkata.A meal for two cost us about 900 bucks. This place is on the pricier side, but is surely a fine dining experience.
