Charles Dicken was profoundly influenced by the sad plight that was widespread in the Englands Workhouses and the gross in justice that was consuming the society at large. Not only this even the abuse of the children was predominant during those times. We can witness these from his works and Oliver Twist seems to be just a perfect instance of them all.
We readers can find that the author has tried to explore the relationship that existed between the pauper and the masters of the workhouses. Satire is abundantly used to describe the sad state of affair of Oliver who had to undergo many cruelty, sufferings and injustices in the workhouses especially through the masters, Mr. Bumble and Mrs. Corney. Oliver is the character that takes the readers through the various ordeals that he undergoes, in other words, the child abuses that he had to endure due to his circumstances. The author after showing the grim picture of sadnesss is able to bring some smile to the readers face by the sprinkle of humour here and there.
