The movie ‘Oh My God’ is based on the Hindi novel, ‘Kishan Vs Kanhaiya and the film ‘The Man Who Sued God’. It is the film which challenges the existence of God on earth directed by Umesh Shukla.
The story is about an atheist who starts believing in God one day, who challenges God, the religion and insurance company, but who lives a simple and honest life.
Kanji Lalji Mehta, played by Paresh Rawal, runs a shop in which he sells idols of all Hindu Gods in Mumbai. He is an intelligent salesman who influences the emotions of the people and sells them at prices, depending on their standard of living. He himself does not believe in God. One day, the religious head of Kashi visits Mumbai for Dahi Handi. Kanji Lalji enters into a brawl with the religious head who curses him that he will be punished for the sin.
Kanji Lal’s bad days begin. His shop is destroyed in and earthquake and when the Insurance agency does not return his claim on the ground of clause stating that it is an ‘Act of God’, he does a case against God challenging the various religious heads and the insurance agency. His wife and children leave him and he is left alone with his neighbor.
The movie takes a turn for further realization by Kanji when God, played by Akshay Kumar enters the story, named Kishan. When Kishan saves him from the authorities and buys his house by allowing him to stay in it, he feels obliged to him. Kanji gives all logical explanations of logically believing in God than blind faith in God and spending unknowingly in the name of religion. Kishan makes Kanjo read The Bible, Bhagwad Geeta and Quran t understand the message of God. The court case and media appearance y Kanji is appreciated by all but he gets a paralytic attack. Kanji is in coma for a month and the world makes him a God and starts earning money in his name. Kishan gives Kanji a new life.
This revives his faith in God with reason. Later Kanji sets all the authorities right. God goes away and leaves message of oneness among all religions, to be free from fear and have faith in the divine. All the people like Kanji get back their money from religious authorities as claim.
Om Puri’s camoe role is good. Mithun Chakravarty in a negative role has also done well. Akshay Kumar and the protagonist Paresh Rawal, especially the latter steal the show.
