His films are as offbeat as his musical compositions yet both manage to touch a chord in the audience heart. After the hugely successful Makdee and the critically acclaimed Maqbool, director Vishal Bharadwaj is back with Omkara, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello. Vishal has juxtaposed this turbulent love story against the dark backdrop of the Chambal ravines to give it a sinister feel. Although Vishal has remained faithful to the Bard’s story, he has taken a few liberties with the character portrayals. While Desdemona worshipped Othello for his bravery and valour, Dolly Mishra (Kareena) loves Omkara (Ajay Devgan) in spite of knowing that he is a henchman and a killer. The suave and sleek villain, Iago, becomes the scheming, devious and downright ugly Langda Tyagi (played brilliantly by Saif Ali Khan). Viviek Oberoi as the handsome Keshu plays his part of the pawn extremely well indeed. Bipasha, Naseer and Kareena lend able support. Ajay as Omkara delivers a powerhouse performance but the show stealer is Konkana Sen Sharma, who in her two-bit role manages to impress really well. The haunting melodies add mystery to the proceedings. Omkara is an ethereal experience.
