OUAT as it is normally called, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology is situated at Bhubaneswar. The Orissa state is primarily a agriculture state but with very low technology, primitive implements, bad seed use and least irrigation. The scientists posted here are more concerned with theories than really work in rural area of KBK region.
TheUniversity has many Departments, including a very good Department ofArchitecture, which has produced many Architects of repute in Orissa.Its Horticulture Department is also very good. It has a very cordialrelationship with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and itsfamous Central Rice Research Institute at Cuttack.
The students of this university hardly shown their mettle in the field.
The present Vice-Chancellor belongs to the IAS, and is a former Chief Secretary of the State. His predecessor was alsofrom IAS. The tradition of having administrators as Vice-Chancellors ofuniversities dealing with Science, Technology and Culture is a goodone, because it creates a sense of inferiority in the minds of theScientists and Technologists, who are second to none in India. Will theChancellor kindly look into this important policy issue ?I think instead of IAS vice chancellors, officers from Indian Police Service (IPS) should be posted to curb the unruly students of this University of agriculture and Technology. specially Police Officers having background in Rural Punjab or Haryana, the most advanced states in agriculture.
