Oyo Rooms is the ’oldest startup’ in the space which was started as Oravel in 2011 by the then 18-year-old Ritesh Agarwal. After graduating from the Peter Thiel Fellowhip program, Oravel pivoted to Oyo Rooms – a chain of branded budget hotels across several cities in India.A year ago, a female colleague of mine had tried the service on my recommendation and the experience was far from positive. The city was Gurgaon and a rather shabby reception with some uncomfortable elements drove her away within a few minutes of stepping inside the room. Luckily, there was a friend nearby who picked her up right away. The customer care numbers didn’t work.
