My likings for the songs in Parineeta are somewhat at extremities for different songs. I loved some with all my heart and I really can’t stand listening to some. But what I liked more than made up for what I didn’t like.
Let’s get down to business, shall we?
===========================================
Raat Hamari Toh
Swanand sounds perfect in this song. He sounds… soulful.
The same goes for Chitra. She sings for most of the song. You can hear a slight vibrato in her voice especially when she stretches the note. The melody is carried by the singer’s voice and a very simple accompaniment, especially in the beginning where Swanand sang with almost no accompaniment. I don’t know why but I just can’t help singing along “raat hamari toh” with the song. I loved the main theme, the “raat hamari toh” more than the melody played by the instruments at the end. I feel that it should have ended with singing and not instruments. But it is a beautiful song, gentle yet impossibly springy with life. I love it.
Hui Main Parineeta
It starts perfectly and simply. The chanting in the background, the soft accompaniment, Sonu Nigam’s sort of husky voice, the soft laughter, everything just blends and fits perfectly into place, like a perfect jigsaw puzzle. A beautifully slow song, perfectly depicting the situation. I tell you, this song is so realistic and ruddy with life
somehow that it practically needs a birth certificate.
Shreya Ghoshal somehow brought the song and the words to life. That slight hesitation in her softly singing voice totally suits the situation. The picturisation on screen was also sensually beautiful, steering clear of vulgarity.
Kasto Mazza
I can’t stand this. I really can’t. It irritates me to the point of insanity. But because of you Mouthshut, I listened to it again. The intro was ok, then when the kids began going “kasto mazza..”, I start to get irritated. Maybe it is the tempo that I can’t stand. Sonu Nigam sounds ok. This song comes after the Hui Main Parineeta in the movie and it somehow just didn’t fit in. Actually its not so bad, just that the “kasto mazza hai lelaima, ramailo blah blah blah” just gets on my nerve. EERRRRR!!!! <while making wild clawing motions at the speaker that is blaring out kasto mazza
Maybe its just me who can’t stand the song because other reviewers liked it just fine. Did you like it?
Soona Man Ka Aangan
Sonu Nigam totally rocked. I mean, it was just so good, so damn perfect. Everything, the emotions in his voice, the way he goes “kaho naa” the second time. Sigh. He makes my heart melt.
Ok, I will stop raving about his voice in this song. I must say, he outshone Shreya Ghoshal in this song and just stole the whole song for himself. Then when they sang together, he didn’t shine out too much because her voice was a tad bit louder. She was great in the “mmmm” and the “aaaaaah” toward the end. Beautiful.
Dhinak Dhinak Dha
Starts horribly, with clown-like sounds and irritating laughter. Nice beat, horrible “dhinak tha”s. It sounds like one of my old aunties singing in the bathroom. Can imagine that?
However, there were two lines, just two lines which I loved in this song. These two lines :
“Kaise hua Milan mausi hume bata,
Arey shaddi ki raat ka kissa humme suna”
The melody there was good but apart from that, there is nothing much here.
Kasesi Paheli Zindhagi
I got a fright of my live when I was watching the vcd. In this song, Rekha looks absolutely… scary!!! Like an old person trying to look young. I still shudder when I think about it.
Anyway, the music is what matters, right?
Well, anyone who knows me well will know that I love all music except jazz. I don’t detest jazz, I just dislike most of it. Kasisi Paheli Zindgani sounds amazingly like an English jazz number I have heard long ago. Sunidhi Chaudan sang this song with the correct “oomph”! She sounds suitably drunk during the la la la, and the ooo’s and the mmm’s. Drunkenly sexy, like the mood the song requires.
Piya Bole
Aha, one of my favourites. This is a very youthful song sang by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal (again).
Starts with beautiful piano intro, an accompaniment intro. One weird thing though, it starts with English “say you’re mine” then hindi “piya bole”. They should have just started it in Hindi. In the beginning there is “la, la, la, hey, hey, hey”. The “la” sounded much better than “hey”. The simple accompaniment evolves into lots of instruments and a choir humming. I just love the ending. The way she goes “hm, hm, hm” and he replies “la, la, la”. The whole song is like a musical conversation. Shreya Ghoshal steals the show here. Another song I can’t listen to without singing along.
===========================================
Overall, I love all the songs except that Kasta Mazza and Dhinak Dhinak Tha.
The music is composed by Shantanu Moitra. I have never heard of him but among other movies he composed for include 99.9FM, Haazaron, Khwaishein Aisi, and Yahaan.
As for me, my favourite songs in the album are (in that order) Raat Hamari Toh, Soona Man Ka Aangan, Piya Bole, Hui Main Parineeta, Kasesi Paheli Zindghani
Did I use the word “beautiful” too much?
This is a review written ad hoc, a rather plain Jane review compared to my last one, which I took some time to write down.
I would love it if you could comment and tell me how my review is and if I have missed out anything.
