Not a bad watch

Futurologist Ian Pearson talked about the ’backup of brain’ quite some time back. And talks of brain being compared to a computer are quite common. We delete files from our PC’s memory, by a few clicks. In the future we delete files from our biological memory also, and technology will grow to such a sophisticated level where we can delete specific files related to specific time period. This is in short what ’’PayCheck” is all about. Now let’s go a bit more deeper into the story, without revealing the finer details ! Micheal Jennings played by Ben Affleck(yeah, of the JLo fame) is a brilliant engineer , rather reverse-engineer, who works for huge sums written on paychecks. He rips-off breakthrough technologies, demystify how things work and reassembles them as completely new products. As expected the big corporates who go for his services want to keep everything confidential. Hence Jenning’s memory for the stipulated period when he is under contract is wiped off. So our Mr Jennings has gaps in life - to be precise when someone asks him what is the last day u remembers on Jan 4, he might answer Dec 31. The memory is erased, as we do with out PCs....hmm not even found in recycle bins!! to be precise. Rethrick (Aaron Eckhart) the owner of Allcom, invites Jennings for an assignment, this will take longer - 3 years and needless to say he will walk out with a huge paycheck sans his memory for 3 years. The film fast forwards 3 years hence. All is well till that time. However Jennings to his amazement finds that he has forfeited his fee for some worthless objects - 19 to be precise. And he doesn’t have any memory of what had happened. To add to our hero’s woes the FBI agents are behind him. Not to say Allcom’s chief and his accomplices. The lady is in the film is Uma Thurman, who plays Rachael Porter. Dr Rachael Porter a biologist at Allcom, to be on the dot. As the story goes, Allcom was trying to come up with a machine with the help of Jennings, which will predict future. And who doesn’t want this? You can win your lottery, know your enemies and take preventive action.... With only Rachael by his side, Jennings now resorts to all kinds of stunts from marshal arts to bike-race to help the world from not ’losing hopes’ (If u know the future what hope?) and as expected the hero n the heroine finishes on the safe side. All is well. You see glimpses of ’Minority Report’ (Both films are based on Philip K. Dick’s stories). Affleck and Rethrick seem good in their roles. Wondered why they chose Thurman, she looks old. May be to portray a lady with brains? You have some banal dialogues, most of them to be peacefully forgotten. But as the film goes on we as the audience seem to predict the future of the film accurately!! Almost everything happens convincingly. And hope is restored. At the bottom line, I don’t deny things depicted in the film happening at least at a concept level in the future. And PayCheck is not that bad that you would like to erase the almost 2 hrs you spend watching the film from your memory..
