When the liberalisation process started in india, one of the first companies to arrive was Pepsico.Their first product was called Lehar Pepsi.I believe the Lehar part of the name has been dropped now.Coke may be the biggest brand the world over but in india Pepsi is king. This may have something to do with their first mover advantage(Coke came only in 1995).But more than this is how the brand has been presented.Initially it was the phirang drink for the having-arrived-in-life Gen X types.Thereafter with Cokes arrival it took Thumps Ups place at the low-end despite being sweeter. The people have come to identify the product with the new permissive india, and with that culture itself.Coke is seen as a premium drink for the upper crrust which not everyone has the capability to appreciate.Pepsi is a more chaloo homely thing. What happens next remains to be seen.
