Soda:Friend or Foe?

According to the National Soft Drink association, 62% of schools in the USA have soft drink contacts, giving soft drink companies exclusive rights to sell their beverages in schools. As a result of students drinking soda with high concentrations sugar during the school day, some dentists are seeing problems. The problem itself isnt nessecarily with the soda itself, but rather with the frequency that kids(students) teeth are exposed to the soda’s sugar during the day. Kids sometimes drink one or two cans of soda throughout the day, which means their teeth don’t have a chance to recover. Small ongoing sips of soda over the course of several hours expose teeth to concentrations of sugar without any break. Tooth decay is a destruction of tooth enamel, which occurs when certain foods containing sugars and starches are frequently left on the teeth. Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on high volumes of sugar, producing acids as a result. Over a period of time, these acids destroy destroy enamel and may result in tooth decay. The American Dental Assosiation(ADA) has taken a stand against vending machine partnerships with schools. The ADA opposes contractual agreements that influence consumption patterns promoting increased acess to soft drink beverages containing sugars, carbonation, and/or acidic products for children. Eating sugary snacks and sipping soft drinks beetween meals can lead to dental decay because the sugar sticks to teeth and causes plaque. Many people don’t cosider sugared soda as ’’junk food’’ simply because it is a beverage. Although the soda contains no fat, drinking a can of Coke or Pepsi is not much better than eating a bag of candy. Colas are primarily made up of water, artificial colors, and sugars. A can of Coke has 39 grams, while Pepsi has 41. That equals about 7 teaspoons, or 13 lumps of sugar per can! So, no, I would not recommend Pepsi or Coke. Although it does have a good taste, I would’nt buy it.
