Persian Darbar, located in Byculla, is one of the oldest restaurants in Mumbai. A look at the restaurant from outside and you wouldnt consider entering, if you were thinking of good ambiance.
The "Never judge a book by its cover" proverb fits this place. The cover of this book may look unappealing, yet a humble request - open it.. it will surprise you.
When you enter the restaurant, go to the AC section, thats on first floor and second floor, its beautiful. The decor does give you a Persian feel. Also, they have separate dining rooms for families where women observe purdah. Thats a plus.
This place serves the best raan biryani. If you want to try the raan biryani make sure there are enough people or people with good apetite. The portion served is enough for 5 to 6 people. After the raan biryani if you still feel like eating, try the Murgh Musallam.
This one too serves 5-6 people. Persian Darbar is the place for authentic chicken/mutton moghlai food. Finish off your meal with a dessert - firni, rabdi or custard, and youll leave the place content and satisfied!
The downside was the slow service, we had to wait for a long time for the raan biryani, perhaps overcrowded that day could also be a reason. Some things are worth the wait.
