Petrol Cars sell more. But advantages of diesel car in India are many, which people tend to ignore due to the glamour of petrol. I own a Uno Diesel and have this to share. i. Diesel is cheaper by almost 40-50% than petrol. So direct saving in running cost. ii. Diesel engine is more efficient than petrol engine, so the mileage of a diesel car is much more than that of a petrol car of same class. Uno-D gives 18+ with AC, on highways. Indica-D gives even more. iii. Maintenance cost is not exorbitant especially with reduction in spare prices after indigenization. iv. Contrary to perception, its possible to maintain diesel car in Rs 1.50-2.00 per km all inclusive. v. Moreover, the new generation diesel engine is as smooth as petrol engine. Pedal response is great. The car may not rev up as fast as a petrol, i.e. no zip, but can go to speeds over 120 on highways without any vibrations. vi. Even the pollution levels are quite controlled in modern diesel fuel. vii.Initial cost of car may be more compared to petrol model, but it’s really cool on the pocket once on the road. Moreover, the resale value of the diesel car will be more than a petrol car and you can hope to recover some part of the high intial investment.
