If you have a choice, always go for a DVD player with auto-resume on power off.
While we love the time remaining feature which our 1 year old LG DVD does not have,
the pause is quite short:
It goes to a screen saver in under 4-5 min and even powers off after another 10 min which is very annoying if you get interrupted often while watching.
This power off should only happen after 1-2 hours.
Our new LG can pause for 1-2 days!
A bookmark feature would also be very helpful when watching:
a) movies with bonus feature
b) TV series on DVD
c) recorded TV
Since if one of the people has to leave the room, you can mark it and start watching something else till they return.
The picture quality on older LCD is quite bad/blurry in night scenes but fast sports type action is OK.
Go for a player with HD upscaling to reduce this problem or use a HDMI cable instead.
The max fwd is 32x so 64x would be better of course.
Slow motion can go from 1/2x to 1/16x which is quite good.
In humid climates like Mumbai the buttons on the player stop working after 1-2 years unless you make it a point to use them instead of the remote every week.
Lack of use allows rust to accumulate on the contacts inside and it costs about Rs. 100-200 to replace each button.
It forgets [volatile memory] your settings at power off like time remaining etc.
This is also an irritant.
It seems to take long to power on [almost 5 seconds] and load a dvd [over 10 secs].
Before buying it, make sure to get it set to region free since it can take time hunting down the codes to be put in the remote to switch it at home.
This is the same as region 0.
If you only watch original Indian DVD, region free is not an issue but we also buy DVD abroad and need them to play as well.
The display is nice and bright unlike our LG which is quite dim and small.
Its also less wide [smaller footprint] than our LG which is always good.
