I dont know how many of you are aware of this fact. But truly speaking the
Philips DVP 642K DVD Player is the best DVD player available in India till date. Why?
The simple reason---it can play whatever you have.Be it Divx 3.11, Divx 4, Divx 5, XVid, MPEG1, MPEG2, VCD, audio CD, JPEG CD, MP3, MPEG4 anything you have. All Video format supported. It plays everything I throw at it!
With MRP of 5, 990 in Chennai with free 10 DVDs.Its very Cost-effective too.
The unit is ultra thin (1.7 high) and stylish. Colors are vivid at its default setting but you have the option to tweak them if you deem necessary via a system menu, a feature that Philips calls SmartPicture.
Video output is available for component video, SVideo or CVBS. For audio you have digital or analog output. You also have an option to set the video for your type of monitor 4:3 P/S, 4:3 Widescreen or 16:9. You may zoom in during playback on both DVD or DivX/XviD files.
With 5.1 Dolby digital & DTS decoder inbuilt, you can experience the Home theatre sound by just plugging it 5.1 speakers. Its having Progressive Scan Output (PSO) for better picture scanning on screen. you can play MP3 in the background while playing your .jpeg photo CD.with 90db signal to noise ratio, you can even hear any sound, good clarity.
The LG & Samsung are way behind the Phillips DVP642K, in terms of compression supported. Philips was the first electronics company with Apple computer to start working on MPEG-4 technology & they did it. With first MPEG-4 supported cost effective DVD player in Indian market.
The only Downline is its simplest remote with no eject button. You have to press the STOP button for a few seconds to eject a disc. also It can display upto 11 character long filename. So no long filename support.
But the best side is, its firmware is upgradeable.
Pros
----
Very media-friendly. No matter what media I threw at it, it played them
Plays properly encoded DivX perfectly, just as if it was a DVD, DivX Certified
Excellent picture quality
Region-free via the remote in only seconds
Cons
----
The remote is crap. The RW/FF buttons actually skip chapters and the Previous/Next buttons Fast Forward and Rewind. By this I mean that the universal icons on the buttons themselves dont match up with the button functions.
max. FF is only 8X whereas LG claims 32X in latest model
Time display on the player only - none on-screen. There is a place for it but its blank (ie --:--)
non-compact design
For those of you who want to make the unit region-free, perform the following:
1) Press the open/close button to open the tray
2) On your remote, press: 7 8 9
3) On your remote, press: OK
4) On your remote, press: 0
This should do the trick, please reply back with success/failure stories.
Overall this player has far exceeded my expectations. Well done Philips!
