My old DVD player conked out recently and I had to buy a new one. I shopped around and looked at all the current models of different brands. I was looking for something that offered the maximum set of features at a reasonable price. The Philips DVP642 fit my requirements perfectly. First of all, the player is one of the few available in India that supports DivX. For your information, DivX is a new video format that is gaining in popularity everywhere and allows you to pack over 2 hrs of DVD quality video into a normal 700MB CD. This would allow you to store an entire movie on a single CD (assuming the movie length is under 2 hrs). Another neat feature of the player is that it can decode the DTS soundtrack on your DVD and play it thru your TV speaker or existing music system or whatever other setup you have. You DONT need any Home Theatre Receiver for this. In other DVD players you would have to attach a DTS compatible Home Theatre Receiver to listen to the DTS track. Finally, the player also has Progressive Scan technology and Component Video outputs which will give you amazing picture quality when connected to a TV which has component video inputs (most good Color tvs nowadays have this). All these features are available at a price of Rs.5800 which is I would say is reasonable but not cheap. I would recommend this player to anyone who has access to a good collection of original DVD movies and decent TV with component video inputs.
