I’m not talking about the movie Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani(Shahrukh Khan, Juhi Chawla)which didn’t do well at the box office. This is about the serial by the same name. The title song is the same as in the film. This serial is about a retired judge and his family.
The family comprises of his 3 sons, their wives and 4 grandchildren besides himself. The 3 sons are Om, Jai and Jagdish and their wives are Ganga, Jamuna, Saraswati(names of rivers). Om is a lawyer who has a history of losing all cases. Jai and Jagdish are also working. Ganga( Om’s wife) is a not-so-literate woman from Punjab. She has a habit of saying things in doubles like kapday-shapday( clothes), school-vool(school) etc. Her favorite line is ’Tujhe bade majaki ho(You are very funny). Saraswati has a habit of forgetting things. She has to keep repeating things to herself to avoid forgetting. Despite doing that, she still forgets things. Jamuna is a fitness freak. She has a well maintained body and her whole day goes in aerobics. She is a modern bahu and prefers to be called Jams rather than Jamuna. Ganga has two twins Ram and Shyam.
One is a study-holic and the other is a freak-a-holic. Saraswati also has 2 kids. The only sane person in the family is the grandfather(after all, he is a retired judge). The serial revolves around the mistakes made by his family members and how in the end he corrects them. The mistakes made by the family members cause hilarious situations. The core point of the serial is the ’Indianess’ of the family and love for each other and for family values. However they do make mistakes and this is where the head of the family( Dadaji) corrects them. A story usually runs for 2-3 episodes hence there is no boredom that one faces when watching daily soaps which move at a snail’s pace.
Each story has a message to convey and herein lies the beauty of the serial, unlike other comedy serials which just produce humour. This serial is a Nirja Guleri production( of Chandrakanta fame). The sets are very nice and lively. Even the dressing sense of the family sense makes you laugh because all members of the family were dresses of the same colour on a day. The actors play their parts very well. Also there is a contest having questions based on the serial with attractive prizes. All in all, a very different comedy serial. Don’t forget to catch it on DD1 on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays at 9:30 pm !
