We miss you Priyadarshan!

The original Hera Pheri was a remake of a Malayalam movie. Unlike many other remakes it was very well made by Priyadarshan, the director. The original star cast as well as the script made for an entertaining comedy and did well at the box office. With such a success, the sequel Phir Hera Pheri has a lot to live up to.

The main characters from the original have been carried forward to the new movie, namely - Sunil Shetty, Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal. The movie starts where the previous one left off.

SPOILER WARNING

Some details of the plot are revealed below. Please scroll down till the end of this section if you do not wish to read it.

The trio still live together, but in a huge mansion. While they are now rich, their lives have not really changed for the better. Akshay Kumar learns of a way to double their money in a short time and persuades Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal to join him in the investment. They invest all their money in the investment scheme run by Bipasha Basu, only to realize that they’ve been cheated of all they own.

From this point the script gets pretty lame with various sub-plots where they try to cheat another gangster (Johnny Lever) of money, who in turn has stolen it from somebody else.

SPOILER ENDS HERE

Phir Hera Pheri is not as entertaining as the original. While the original Hera Pheri depended upon dialogues to provide comedy, the sequel depends upon slapstick humor and the movie suffers due to it.

The main cast has performed well, with Paresh Rawal carrying away most of the scenes.

On the whole, the movie by itself is not so bad, but that is mainly because one is forced to compare it with the original, which is a difficult task for any sequel to a successful movie. If you haven’t seen the original Hera Pheri, you might even like it. If you’ve already seen the original, see the sequel, if only to keep track of the storyline for the next sequel.
