PINK: - GOOD ‘KNOWN’ MESSAGE, NOT SO GOOD EXECUTION
So well, after watching this movie, I came to a conclusion that it isn’t as extraordinary, game changing, thought provoking etc. as its being told by almost all. What could be the reason for it?
Maybe the issue was such that regardless of loopholes, it has to be liked.
Maybe it was indeed brilliant for others, not so for me.
Maybe the society won’t accept you if you say something negative about such a movie.
If Badlapur was like “Don’t miss the beginning”, Pink is like “Don’t miss the end credits” as the incident that leads to the happenings in the movie is shown right at the end, so quite a few of them would surely have missed it as was visible from the theatre in which I saw the movie as well.
It’s a movie made with good intentions as it wants to convey a strong message, so it has to be applauded for that. For countless years now, women in the society are judged based on some pre-conceived notions which don’t seem to stop. Life has always been difficult; we tend to pay a huge price for some small thing which would never seem to lead to such consequences.
Coming to the movie, it is about 3 girls in Delhi:- Meenal Arora(Taapsee Pannu), Falak Ali(Kirti Kulhari)& Andrea(Andrea Tariang) who have been threatened because of an incident with 3 boys after a rock concert. How women are perceived in the society, how politicians make police work for them, can the girls survive is all what Pink is about.
There’s no story here, it’s just an incident and the consequences that it leads to, so nothing to boast off for Ritesh Shah’s story. Obviously, in such a movie which involves court-room battles, defence lawyer will come up with some good dialogues at the end, so it does. Direction by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury flows in the way he wants it to, so people gloomed to it will like it, others won’t. Editing by Bodhaditya Banerjee is just not good enough, movie could have been at least 15 min short. I liked the cinematography by Abhik Mukhopadhyay as it had some really nice captures which uplifted the movie.
Kaari Kaari is a good song which comes twice in the movie& the background score by Shantanu Moitra is also decent.
Coming to the performances, Taapsee Pannu did a good job. It was a tough role and she did justice to it. Andrea looked decent& was good. Angad Bedi as the lead antagonist has limited screen time but shines brightly in what he does. Piyush Mishra is wasted as is every prosecution lawyer in Bollywood movies. Amitabh Bachchan is just about average in his performance, he had a role which makes him strong& he did that. Rest of the cast was also good but the one who stole the show was easily Kirti Kulhari as Falak Ali. I loved her performance all through the movie, she had the right expressions, emotions& fear throughout which was heartening to see.
Coming to the good things in the movie: - It’s something which happens on a regular basis but isn’t shown to this extent in movies. Also, the breakdown scene of Kirti Kulhari, the threats that girls receive, the way the girls are being thought off in their own society has been shown brilliantly.
Now I’ll point out loopholes& there are plenty of them as follows:-
Amitabh Bachchan is shown to have a bipolar disorder due to which he quit his job(Lawyer). Still, he was always on the lookout for these girls case& oh boy, he fought& won! A man who wasn’t able to even speak properly in 1st half was in full flow in 2nd half. Why not! I have to win the case, so bye bye any mood swings. “Bipolar disorder”:- Wo kya hota hai My Lord! Lol!
There was this house owner who trusted the girls& was even attacked by these boys. Wow! An ideal witness for the girls to win the case right? Naah, they ain’t got time for this!
Each girl was threatened in a way or other& Meenal was even taken away in a car which Deepak Sehgal(AB) saw, called police, gave directions etc. but nothing about it was discussed in the court room. Tujhe kya hai bhai, jo dikha rahe hai dekhna! Ok
Why was Deepak Sehgal so interested in these girls since beginning? He used to stare constantly due to which they had to close curtains of their windows as well. Yet, he only came up& helped them. Wow! Aise log aur hote to kitni achchi baat hoti nahi!
If the boy’s father was a politician& he helped file a wrong FIR, why was nothing done to him& there was no further help by him to his son? Chodon na yaar, aur bhi kaam hai zamane mein.
The complaint by Meenal was registered& the SP of Police had assured “Not to worry”. Even that angle wasn’t discussed in the court room. Arey yaar, bataya na ek baar ke police bhi ladkon ke saath thi, to assume ke saare desh ki police unke saath thi.
There was no cross initially by AB but later on, as the movie had to finish, all those were questioned& proved wrong. Haan to movie khatam to karni padegi na!
Why was the title named "Pink"? If its with the fact that you associate it with women, than again, youre also going with pre conceived notions. Well, jo bhi ho.
All in all, it’s a movie made with good intentions& sends out a much needed message that “No Means No” but as a movie, there are too many loopholes all through. I would rate it 2.5/5.
If someone has read this& is wondering why so negative:-
I know what’s shown here& most of you as well. The ones who don’t will still not.
While the message is proper, what I wanted was a big, proper and apt solution for this which wasn’t shown.
Rich-spoilt brats, desperate& jealous people won’t stop, some big steps need to be taken soon.
I don’t understand why Bollywood movies tend to make a joke out of each Prosecution lawyer! This time though, Piyush Mishra had some good points but his accent was made to look funny. But ya, it was much better than the one in Rustom where I felt so sorry for Sachin Khedekar. In recent times, Shahid was a movie which had some brilliant court room scenes.
Every woman in India will probably like this movie but I am not happy with it, it’s a disgrace that women here have to go through this.
Also, in urge of freedom, everyone should be careful when it comes to drinking& anger. These 2 can lead to drastic consequences, so one& all, be careful, stay safe.
