A good horror sci-fi thriller, ’’Pitch black’’is one of those movies which tests both your imagination and nerves.A superb flick which although enervates you filling you with angst, at the same time does a pretty good job of satisfying your craving for thrills.
MAIN PEOPLE
Fry: One of the most striking characters, captain of a ship which eventually crashlands on an alien planet.Played by: RADHA MITCHELL.
Riddick: A runaway convict and more....., arguably the most important person in the movie.Played by:VIN DIESEL.
Johns: A lawman of sorts, who eventually cracks under pressure.Played by:COLE HAUSER.
THE PLOT
A spaceship makes a crashlanding on an alien planet, a planet with 3 suns , with so much light, that no life and water exists, on the surface at least.The surviving crew is a fine collection rich in diversity.Earlier in the movie, Riddick, the escaped convict apparently taking refuge in the craft poses the biggest threat to others, a killer devoid of emotions and as hard as they come, to the core.However, that is until they find out that there had been people on the planet from another stranded spacecraft, the big question was :Where were they now?.......Like one of the crew members accidentally finds out and leaves a trail of blood for others to know, there was something underground, scared of light which hunted on other beings and judging from the remains it’d left of its kill, it was a hardcore carnivore capable of pulling off awfully gruesome feats.The rest of the crew make peace with Riddick, realising he was the least of their worries and that they had to work together to get out of this soup. They needed to get back to the ship and out of there with power cells, only their worst fears come to life with Fry’s discovery that they were in for a total solar eclipse which’d mean the whole planet would be engulfed in total darkness.......which would mean those awful creatures.............to contend with. So, it isn’t long before the eclipse occurs leading to pitch darkness everywhere.One by one, some owing to their own foolishness and some due to their misfortune perish at the hands of these creatures, who can fly and detect prey through movement.Then, ensues a varied collection of nailbiting, thrilling, chilling events each ending with a gasp from you as Fry, Riddick and Co. put up a blind struggle for survival. As the story moves on, we are left with 3 people-a priest , his son and Fry about to make a hasty getaway on their ship, when they realise Riddick isn’t with them. All was well and good but then out of the darkness comes a cry of anguish-from who?.........None other than Mr.convict-Riddick, who transforms into a bit of an unlikely hero during the course of the movie. Now comes the acid test---Shall Fry abandon Riddick in his state of helplessness and save the 3 bodies she could or would her sense of duty prevail, and she would attempt to rescue him too, maybe? Which will it be? A tragedy ? A happy ending? Or none? Guess it’d only be fair if you find out for yourself.
INTEGRAL FEATURES OF THE MOVIE
1.Van Diesel plays an outstanding role& the depiction of his transformation from a cynic curmudgeon to a hero deserves a lot of praise.
2.The direction of David Twohy deserves even more praise, has done a splendid job of convincing us of the prevailing circumstances.
3.The special effects in the movie were pretty good without which the projection of the idea behind the movie wouldn’t have been possible.
4.The overall cast performance has been very commendable, better than most movies we come across.
5.The movie has a huge twist and an unexpected ending indeed, well it never ceases to amaze you throughout.
