Ever since the first look of PK was unveiled on August 1, 2014, the whole of country has been troubled by multiple questions – who is PK? What is he doing on a railway track with a transistor and that too fully nude? The teaser of the film added to the questions. Why are his ears unusually protruding? Why are his eyes green? Why does he speak Bhojpuri?! Finally, as PK released today, it was a relief to finally get the answers to all these questions. At the same time, I got thoroughly entertained and satisfied, in true blue Rajkumar Hirani style!
The story and best scenes won’t be listed in this review to provide a spoiler-free experience to the readers!
Except Munnabhai MBBS, all the other films of Rajkumar Hirani follow a simple rule – there will be no ‘waste of time’ even for a second. Every scene will have significance and will help the narrative to move forward. We saw that happening in Lage Raho Munnabhai as well as 3 Idiots. PK is no exception. Hence, there’s no time to blink as every minute, something is happening that’s key to the narrative. This is not easy and some of the biggest makers have not been able to achieve to do so. But Hirani and co-writer Abhijat Joshi achieved this feat not once or twice but thrice! They are legends!
The answers to most of the questions will be answered in the first 5-10 minutes itself. Hence, do yourself a favour – don’t miss the beginning at any cost! And as with Hirani film, there’s humour at lot of places and that too in a very unusual style. Hence, be prepared to laugh your guts out! At the same time, Hirani and Joshi give out an interesting message that will surely be loved. At the same time, the message that they are trying to give can be found objectionable by certain communities and groups. It has happened in the past as well with a movie that was in the similar league. But PK goes a step forward and tries to show all sides of the issue. Hence, even if somebody wants to create trouble, they’ll find it difficult to do so!
PK gets better as it moves forward. But the best is reserved for the finale. PK boasts of one of the greatest endings ever. It’s an ending that will make you wait with bated breath and once it’s unveiled, it’s surely going to make you break into a smile and surely claps as well!
PK rests on powerhouse performances of all the actors. But surely, Aamir Khan takes the cake. He looks damn adorable and performance wise, this is surely one of his greatest and most memorable performances ever! He’ll impress viewers in every scene but one sequence – the song ‘Bhagwan Hai Kahan Re Tu’ – stands out. Aamir is phenomenal and is surely going to melt your heart! Way to go Aamir!
Anushka Sharma looks amazing in her new hairdo and delivers a spectacular performance. She compliments Aamir very well and gives her hundred percent in matching up to his energy and act. Sushant Singh Rajput thoroughly impresses in his cameo performance. Sanjay Dutt looks cool and adds to the film’s entertainment quotient with his small role. Saurabh Shukla plays the role of the antagonist quite well. He understands the character and nuances thoroughly resulting in his flawless performance! Boman Irani for the first time doesn’t play a negative or grey character and even then he is at his best. After 3 Idiots, Parikshit Sahni once again gets to play a father who is distressed as his child does against the societal norms. As expected, he gives a fine performance! And Ranbir Kapoor is outstanding in the lone sequence!
Shantanu Moitra & Ajay-Atul’s music seeps into the narrative with ease. Tharki Chokro is the best of the lot and Bhagwan Hai Kahan Re Tu too makes a tremendous impact. Chaar Kadam is well shot and performed. Same goes for Love Is A Waste Of Time. Sanjay Wandrekar and Atul Raninga’s background score is subtle but leaves a mark. Costumes are impressive and hats off to designers Manoshi Nath & Rushi Sharma for effectively using clothes of aam junta on Aamir. A never-before-used idea for sure! VFX is not the best but no complaints on that regard.
Abhijat Joshi and Rajkumar Hirani’s story is unique which is made better with their screenplay which in turn gets better with the funny and novel dialogues! And Hirani’s direction as always is terrific. The manner, in which he entertains and enlightens and at the same time, doesn’t get preachy or boring, is no easy task. Hats off! Only small grouse is that, I wish that few loose ends were taken care of. Even then, the film works big time, though!
On the whole, PK is one of the greatest films that you’ll see in your life! It is hilariously entertaining and at the same time, raises some very important questions. The film comes at a right time and hence, the impact is manifold! Performances are exemplary and Aamir Khan once again delivers an adorable and memorable performance that will surely be remembered for years to come! At the box office, the film is surely going to break lot of records and create new ones(which I feel the makers could have achieved without raising prices and arm-twisting exhibitors). It’ll be a crime to miss this one…go for it right now!
