This unassuming restaurant(part of a Chennai chain) is located above the Chung Wah restaurant in Frazer Town. It’s on the first floor and has 2 levels. There are only about 9-10 tables in total. We visited at around 3.30pm on Sunday and the lunch rush was just leaving. It was a largely family crowd that I saw there. We got place to sit easily enough and our waiter was very attentive. There was a tamil radio station in the background which added to the charm of the place. The place is done up in beige and brown with yellow lighting & there is a couch for those who are waiting. At the same time however you will see their invertor on display right next to the receptionist and a constant bustle of people moving back and forth from the kitchen. I really like places like these which are comfortable and not overly pretentious!(Ambience wise I think the closest I have been to is the nagarjuna on residency rd. I think this place is better)
The menu has all the chettinad favorites. We ordered 2 meals - 1 fish and the other mutton & a shark puttu. We were served on banana leaves. Each meal consisted of rice, buttermilk, rasam, 1 veg dry item, 1 dry & wet preparation of fish/mutton & papad. The rice was nice and fluffy. The fish fry was perfectly crispy and the masalas they used were just right. The fish curry was amazing as well. The mutton curry unfortunately did not have enough pieces in it but the gravy was nice and thick and really tasty and the few pieces of mutton I had were great. The dry mutton was flavorful and didn’t taste exactly like a dry version of the curry. The masalas were different and I totally enjoyed it. The rasam was very tangy and tasty though the buttermilk was super watery. The shark puttu was incredible – chilli, garlic, shark, coconut and masalas. Very simple and very delicious. I was too full to have the dry veg dish. Our bill came to around Rs.380.
It’s not really a super classy kind of place which will impress your guest/client/date. It’s more the kind of place you come to with family/friends to have some seriously good food! All in all I would definitely go back to this place. It’s excellent value for money & more importantly I really liked the food and the service! They also do home delivery and I hear they have a larger branch in Koramangala.
