I had not heard of Poovar Islands, until I visited it last week with my hubby , a very unplanned trip to Kanyakumari led us there by chance for we were on the way to Kovalam near Trivandrum and It was love at first sight with the Island for both of us . We were actually browsing for nearby places from Kanyakumari, and we stuck upon Kovalam (where there are number of beach resorts to relax), but while browsing, we stumbled upon this Poovar Island Resort and when inquired, most of them said it was supposedly unexplored.
So we just thought why not go and see ? Poovar islands is some 80-90 kms drive from Kanyakumari and the best way to enjoy the sereness or to go on a cruise is to get into any of those five resorts in Poovar. We stayed in Poovar Island Resort.
We checked in around 12 in the afternoon, and after we confirmed our stay, we were taken to the resort through motor boat, some 10 minutes , say from the parking slot . It was cool and the welcome was as calm and mannered as the climate there.
We were given all necessary precautions and information about the sea and the backwaters. None of the guests were allowed to the sea after 6.30 p.m, especially because our stay was during off -season, and the sea was little rough. Our package included dinner and breakfast. The restauraunt had its decor and all the attendants were dressed in traditional keralite style and it was also multi-cusine for the convenience of all.
The resort also makes arrangements if one had to go on an Island Cruise or do a kind of bird watching around the Island, fbut one has to pay separatley for these activiities, and believe me Island Cruise is stunning and enchanting, the boatman loads one up with all information and Cruise in the rowing boat through the silent yet deep backwaters make memorable moment.
It takes almost three hours for the cruise to complete around five small islands , but you never know its Three Hours! Other than this, if one wants to go to the sea, they always have boats ready in the resort to take you there - this is non-chargeable. The Room service was fine, except a little for its delay.
The sea (an extension of Arabian) is vast and the sunset is very beautiful when viewed from the boat (in Backwaters).
The resort also has floatlets during season , that is from November to March. And the Boatman tells , that most of those who visit the place are Europeans. He also tells that During season one can find rare birds and flowers all through the Island. On our Cruise, we saw little herons, Kites, tailor birds, cuckles, rare type of crows etc. But flowers we did not because of the season .

This is one of the best spot for a (hidden holiday - borrowing the phrase from my siss comments on our snaps)
