I first read "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle about ten years ago. Though I liked it, the book didnt make a deep impression. I recently started reading it again while waiting for a train and this time, it really "clicked."
Tolle writes in a down-to-earth style without seeking to impress. Hes narrates how he was transformed one night from misery and depression to a state of enlightenment and liberation from all suffering. It took him time to understand and fully appreciate the depth of his transition from suffering to "presence."
The central message of the book is that we are all addicted to unconscious thinking and the way out is to become aware of your thoughts. The thinking mind is the cause of all suffering and the aware present mind is the way to reach true happiness.
I highly recommend this book to everyone.
However, dont read it like an ordinary book. Read a few pages or even a few lines and then reflect on them. Think about how you can apply Tolles insights into your life. And remember, the doors to liberation open inwards.
