Rishi and Dimple, who stole the hearts of millions years ago, with Bobby, and later on with Sagar, come together in PMT, in what is a mature love story. Hindi cinema is slowly entering hitherto unexplored areas, and with PMT, Shetty enters into the world of single senior citizens, their sacrifices, their yearning for love and affection, and their desire to re-marry. Both Rishi and Dimple, after the death of their respective spouses, have put their personal lives aside, to look after their children’s welfare. With time, the children have grown up, and start living their own lives. An accidental meeting between these two, starts of a love hate relationship, but soon they are drawn to each other, clearly able to sense each other’s loneliness and emotional hunger. They seem to have a good level of comfort in their relationship. But the world is not kind to those in love, especially if they happen to be mothers and fathers of grown up children. Their own children fail to understand them, on hearing about their love life, and all hell breaks loose. Under the tutelage of an elderly, worldly-wise sister in law, Farida Jalal, Rishi and Dimple elope!!. They live together, and eventually learn to tolerate each other. Love blossoms, and even as the children turn frantic, the two decide to marry. All’s well that ends well, as the kids see beyond their noses, and come to terms with their parents requirements.
A few good songs, a rehash of some old Rishi Kapoor melodies, a reasonably good screenplay, and some excellent performances from Rishi Kapoor, Dimple, and Farida Jalal are the hallmarks of the film. Even today, Rishi and Dimple sizzle on the screen, and can give many a young screen couple a run for their money. And the makers of the film have gone ahead with a bold idea, and if this film inspires a few old couples to come together and re-marry, and if it increases social acceptability, it would have done a great job. Don’t hesitate-- go for it.
